Pretty good read discussing ticket prices, his past at Duke, his coaching philosophies, and his goals at LSU.
Alleva has been a much better AD than people like to give him credit for. Years from now he will likely be viewed very favorably due to the improvements to Tiger Stadium and football's sustained success.

quote:
"I have a philosophy that I like to hire good people and let them do good jobs," he says. "My job is to help them do their jobs. So whether it's the football coach, or whether it's the volleyball coach, if they need something—come and see me, and I'll try to help you. Most of my conversations with [LSU head football Coach] Les [Miles] are, What can I do to help you?' That's most of my conversations with most of my coaches."
Alleva has hired a handful of coaches at LSU, most notably women's basketball Coach Nikki Caldwell, men's basketball coaches Trent Johnson and Johnny Jones, and a few Olympic sports coaches. How he does it is worth noting.
"Of course I like to get recommendations and things like that, but hiring a coach, at the end of the day, one of the main criteria I look at is [whether I] would want my kid to play for that person. And if that person came into my house recruiting my kid, could they recruit my kid? Of course you look at experience, and you look at their records, but at the end of the day my gut check is would I want my kid to play for that person."
The word "fit" always comes up when hiring.
"Here you have to have the ability to reach out to the public. Be out there and shake hands and talk to people. I think that's very important. The culture here is very friendly, and you need to be like that."

Im not a Joe fan.
He has done fine. But numerous others could have done "fine" too.
Football is king but most other sports are neglected.

This couldn't be farther from the truth. Alleva has made all sports more of a priority than any recent ADs.

Alleva has been a great AD for LSU. People who complain about him don't have any clue what they are talking about and/or want a top 5 athletic department but don't want to pay for it.

I read the article a few days ago and thought it was great. Overall, Alleva has done a great job

I'm still bothered by the way he cowered to the pc crowd and threw the lacrosse coach and players under the bus in the Duke Lacrosse situation, but I think he has done a decent job at LSU. Maybe he learned something from his time at Duke.

If by hard on you mean I appreciate a good job, then yes.

This. I would never have hired him. Wasn't he looing to jump ship a couple years ago to another SEC school.

In the end it will come down to what Jones does with the BB program and who he hires when Miles steps down.

People bitching about something that a) happened when he wasn't even at LSU and b) they don't understand the inner workings about is just so stupid. Just because a decision he made turned out to be the wrong one doesn't necessarily mean the process he used to make said decision was flawed. The real crook in that case was the prosecutor and he ended up being disbarred over it.

Joe alleva could stab an innocent baby right before your eyes and you would find a way to defend him. You must be him.

Totally agree

quote:I guess you don't because if you did a little research, you would see that Aleva chose to believe a crack-whore stripper over his own players and his head coach. Like I said, it appears that he learned something from that because he hasn't done anything close to that at LSU. In fact, for the most part he is silent when there are off the field issues involving players. But, hey, don't let facts get in the way.

Geezum DS, do you ever not have a contrarian opinion?
I am not a fan of Alleva, but I'll give. Credit where it's due. The facility upgrades are fantastic.
My beef with him is what I perceive as a loss of tradition. Just in the times I've been back since I graduated in 07, it's a very different gameday experience.
For example, charging for parking herded everyone away from campus to the Nicholson areas, which lead to the vast increase in the traffic problems. There was something about walking through campus and seeing it full of people. It's different now, and that's not necessarily a good thing.
I get that we make a but load of money off of these neutral site games and I'm going to Houston. But I'd rather be playing Wisconsin home and home. That's a premium matchup that won't be played in Tiger Stadium. When's the last time we've had a major non-SEC game at home?
Finally the loss of night games, which I can't totally blame on Joe. That has a big part to do with TV. But I feel like Joe could've been a lot more vocal in his displeasure of the constant 3pm move ups. Seems like certain teams have no issue with getting prime scheduling.
Just my $.02.

I understand being displeased by this. But this comes with being a big-time program (and being in a city with atrocious infrastructure and inept police). As someone previously stated, our fans want an elite program, but don't want to pay for it. Can't have it both ways.
And I don't know where you're walking, but the campus is still packed full of people every Saturday on the Parade Ground, Frat Row, the Quad, Lockett, etc.

I have literally no idea what else he could do about this at this point. He voiced his displeasure to everyone, including the media. He is the voice of one of of 14 teams. No one else gives a frick about our night games. Deal with it.

Yeah, teams that suck and no one wants to watch get to play at night all the time. We should start sucking again.
