I believe this will be an eventual political battle, and the democratic party will use the same point they do about many other proposals:

"Europe does it, so we must too".

Personally, I think this is an issue that a woman should work out when she is looking for a job. Many companies use paid maternity leave to entice female workers to work for them (tech companies, especially). I'm not comfortable having the government step in, however, and mandate paid leave for a company that is just barely making it.

Let us also remember that other wealthy nations do this because they are trying desperately to increase birth rates, not because they are "socialist". America does not have that problem, due to immigration.

To blow your mind: Bulgarian women get 56 weeks paid maternity leave. Sweet Jesus!

Personally, I think it's something that businesses should offer if it is practical for them to do so.

Mandating? No.

I hate all this mandating BS. We are smart enough to figure a lot of things out for ourselves.

If 'yes' then what about paid paternity leave?

In a lot of countries the men get paid leave as well.

What does Africa do? I'm tired of this Eurocentric thinking of the dems.

Is the goal here to make it more difficult for a woman to become employed in the first place?

Or at least an asterisk in the next "Equal Pay for Equal Work" bill proposed.

BINGO! We have a winner!

That is a part of the long game here.

Pass a policy that makes it more difficult for a woman to get employed.

Woman gets angry about "equal rights" and the democrats play the "war on women" card. They get to demonize greedy businessmen while touting they are pro-woman.

The government now has many paths to take. Pass more legislation to combat the fact women aren't getting hired, which gives the government more control and power, part of their long goal.

Women, now unemployed, turn to the government for solutions and needs. Government wins here too.

Yep. Would suck to be a young newly-married or engaged woman trying to land a job. Especially an entry-level one.

frick No.

I hate working with my Euro counterparts because some of them are constantly gone on maternity leave and the people left to pick up the slack are overworked as shite.

No, a lot of progressive companies (like large law firms) offer generous paid maternity leave, and I've already encountered women bitching about how their firm only gives 10 weeks, etc. It's nuts.

If it's competition driven, fine. But mandatory is just baffling to me. Then again, I'm a relic who still is astounded that a young, well-to-do and privileged girl started a national campaign about how she shouldn't have to pay for her own birth control.

Companies won't pay. Their customers will.

Looking at unemployment rates of women, most countries with it have lower rates and higher labor force participation.

I'm inclined to say no...

...however, I think we all benefit when it is easier for the producers in this country to reproduce.
