Been puttin up half runners and purple hulls this week. Friend of mine has a sister in Boca Raton and she said her sister makes purple hull jelly out of the hulls. I've had corn cob jelly and pepper jelly, but I've never even heard of purple hull jelly. Do yall know anybody that has made jelly out of purple hulls? Or is she just lyin to me?

Well, it seems there IS such a thing as purple hull jelly. May hafta try it. All these years, I've been turnin em back under the garden or feedin em to the cows. Figgered since my friend's sister lives down yall's way and makes it, some of yall may have put some on a cathead at some time or another.

Virginia. Love them speckled butter beans, too. Didn't plant any this year, though. Did you raise the climbing or the bush butter beans?

Climbing and they are doing well. Purple hulls did well just played out. Wish I would have heard of this jelly a month ago but I've got it filed in my head for next year.

Still have some late planted cucumbers and about a dozen creole tomatos left on the only two plants I still have in the ground. They will be ready to pick Saturday and that will be it for them. Had some nice Cherokee purple tomatoes too but all done. I'll give it a few weeks then get in it and get it ready for some cabbage and winter root vegetables. Need to till some chicken shite in it.

My maters are just now comin in. About when do yall have your first killin frost? We've had it as early as Sept. 15 here, but it's usually around the middle of October for us. Gonna plant my collard seed next week.

Could be October but hell it could be January around here. Just walked outside to pick my wife some thyme for a soup she's making and it's probably 90 degrees. At 9:30 at night. Like an oven. So hot I had to drop two ice cubes in my Scotch. And I'm only sipping a scotch because I wanted to pretend that first killing frost was tonight.

It's hotter than little sister at big sisters wedding.

UPDATE:

Just now got that first batch of purple hull jelly in the jars. Made six pints as an experiment. Dang good experiment, too. That jelly is some of the best I've ever tasted. Ain't no doubt in my mind that you and your family will like it. I'll have enough purple hulls to make gallons and gallons if I wanted to. It's real easy to make and it's much better tastin' than any of that store bought jelly. A jar of this stuff is gonna go in my bug out bag for sure.
