Foundation.

quote:

Mary’s Gourmet Diner has announced it will no longer offer occasional discounts to people who pray before eating, citing the threat of legal action.
The restaurant’s prayer discount had gone viral in recent days, making national news shows and sparking heated arguments on the Internet.

On Wednesday, the restaurant posted a handwritten notice in its front window stating that it must “protect your freedom from religion in a public place.”

quote:

The discount made national news after some customers – Dan Bremnes, a Christian recording artist, and Jordan Smith, a promoter at Capital Music Group – posted their receipt on their Facebook pages after they passed through Winston-Salem and got a 15 percent discount at Mary’s for “Praying in Public.”
The lawyer for a group called the Freedom From Religion Foundation then sent Haglund a letter branding the discount illegal under federal civil rights laws.

quote:

“People who are atheists don’t pray,” Gaylor said, adding that it is illegal to “charge an atheist more than a Christian.”

hmmmm, maybe I missed the law that businesses arent allowed to have religious undertones.

Or is this another one of the idiotic crusades by you and the rest of the militant atheists that give our movement a bad name?

If I were the business owner I would not change a thing. Discounts are not illegal. Women can drink for free on a given night and seniors can pay a reduced price simply because of their age.

This is the kind of tactic that make atheists look like weasels.

Seems to me like Mary can still offer a discount to anyone she likes. Just be quiet about it. It's none of the next table's business what she charges me for my meal.

Proof that law and justice are two totally different concepts now, and have been for hundreds of years.

The fact that this offends people is pathetic.

Did it say it was based on religion? It seems all you had to do was pray before dining, regardless of religion.

Then its illegal to offer senior citizens discount because of their age or women discount because of their gender.

And stores who honor coupons discriminate against those who don't bring a coupon.

uhh, no? there's specifically a law against discriminating against those based on religion. Not so with age
(although that may vary by state, not really sure)

Is that a problem for you? Good fricking god. Who the hell are you, prancing around every little shop and business looking for "discrimination"?

I don't know if this is discrimination, any non believer can eat there, you just wouldn't qualify for the discount if you didn't pray.

I am sure these folks would be shocked to learn a shite ton of people had been taking advantage of the policy as well.

I guess the 10% church bulletin discount is next.

It's one thing to file suit against a governmental entity. They shouldn't favor any particular religious sect over any other, or over those who choose none.

But a PRIVATE entity? It's not like the atheists are being told they can't eat there.

no it doesnt. Anyone can "pray".

I see we've found another little militant atheist. Tell us clown, how is someone prohibited from praying if they dont have a religion?
