Texans fans: How are we feeling about Clowney?

I have a really sour taste in my mouth about all of this.
We are standing him up at outside linebacker to rush the passer. I have two problems with this.
1. I don't think he's made for this position. I think the advantage of his speed comes with him playing on the d-line.
2. This means Whitney Mercilus, our first round pick from last year, won't be starting.
Not to mention that Crennel is changing the responsibilities of the front 3. Now they are all responsible for two gaps instead of one, which I fear will make Watt less affective.
And God knows how Cushing will look in this defense.
I just get the feeling that Houston has some talented pieces on defense, but I'm worried that they don't fit together at all.
I hope Clowney proves me wrong, but I wish we had just drafted Kahlil Mack.

He will get tired after two plays and need to go to the sideline for a breather

I agree with almost all your sentiment. I will say, crennel is an excellent DC- shitty HC- but really good defensive mind, so I will wait and see before I bitch about how the D fits together
And Cush will be fine schematically. I am much more worried about him staying healthy.

Not according to the depth chart released by the team. Obviously nothing permanent, but it means something.

How has he looked in practice? Is he making plays and shite?
Posted on 8/7/14 at 12:22 pm to SwaggerCopter
I gotcha. I was looking at the ESPN depth chart. I don't see the Texans not finding a spot for Mercilus.

Romeo will probably move Clowney around all over the place to wreak havoc.

And honestly, I should trust Romeo. He knows what he's doing hopefully.

All of this just makes you frustrated with the draft process.
If Clowney has his way, no way does he go to a team that runs a 3-4.
Many busts have been just as much on the team as the player.

It honestly doesn't.

Size wise Crennel has typically had large OLBs rushing the passer in his 3-4. McGinest was like 6 5 270. Vrabel was 6 4 260. Justin Houston and Tamba Hali were similarly built. I'm not surprised we are standing him up and it's the right thing to do, he would have to bulk up quite a bit to be able to occupy blockers and space like they want out of an end.
As far as Mercilus I expect him to play quite a bit despite not starting. Cushing has been fine as an ILB and can play pretty much anywhere. The only worry about him is health obviously.
The front 7 is probably the last thing that worries me about this team

From practice reports, he has been wrecking havoc. He also appears to be working very hard and trying to learn. I, for one, and very excited to see him play.

I have a buddy who played ball with, and is very close to, Brandon Brooks. He told me that Brandon and everyone else thinks Clowney is a fricking beast and is better than everyone thought.
/end thread.

I wanted the falcons to nab him so badly...he's going to be a true bust

I'm not understanding your logic here. Seems more advantageous for a 3-4 OLB. It allows him to play in more space and beat the lineman to a point

Plenty of OLBs are close to Clowney's speed. No DEs have that kind of speed. And his huge size theoretically is more of a weakness than strength at outside linebacker. Slows down side to side quickness and gives tackles more to block.
Now all of this could be wrong. Maybe Clowney is just an absolute freak, and he will change the game.

This. This. This.
Also reports from camp are that he's been nothing but an absolute playmaker. I think you're overthinking this and trying to come up with ways to not be excited about the pick/ upcoming season for some reason? Clowney is going to be fine and great for y'all. Just enjoy having him and Watt for perceivably the next 10 years.
