Just curious about the recovery time. I know they tell you about two weeks but I know doctors tend to overestimate. I'm 21 by the way.

The older you are the longer and more painful the recovery is.

Two weeks is about right. Possibly longer.

Eta: congrats on the liquid lortab.

surgery sucked, but he didn't get sick anywhere near as often afterg getting tonsils removed....

Thanks guys. I got it done today so I'm just sitting here in bed pretty miserable right now. Doc told me that my tonsils were near golf ball size.

In one session I had tonsils, adenoids, deviated septum and uvula removal. Swallowing afterwards felt like I was swallowing razor blades. The packing they pulled out of my nose was about 6feet long.

But the worst part was my negative reaction to the anesthesia. I did not feel like "myself" for about a year. It was like I was watching a movie but not actually being engaged with anyone.

Overall I am much better than before, sleep without interruption (I used to have sinus infections that would not go away with antibiotics and constantly tossed and turned due to congestion and fever) and only get sick with sinus infection once a year. I can play golf where as I used to sneeze 40 times a round.

Wasn't too bad. Worse part I remember is when the scabs started to come off and I was coughing blood and little pieces of scabs. Sorry for the visual

if your tonsils were that swollen, you are gonna do a lot better without them...justtake it easy and don't try to do anything at all...

and take your pain meds so that you can stay comfortable enough to heal up quickly...

Yeah, I have had strep throat 5 times this year so I knew it was about time.

I got sick multiple times a year before I had mine out, ever since I rarely ever have any issue. Was a big improvement for me.

Had tonsils and adenoids out at 20. The evening after the surgery I felt just fine.. But unfortunately, it gets way worse before it gets better. Swallowing razor blades is a generous way to describe it.

Had mine removed in my late 20s. Puked repeatedly immediately after getting home. Took 3 weeks to return to work. I varied being able to drink things cold and room temperature daily, but that was probably more of just a personal reaction.

This is 100% true. I developed a massive fever about 5 days post op and didn't leave the couch for two days except to crawl to the bathroom to piss. Doc said it was normal if that helps

Very rarely get sick anymore though, and when I do, it's a cakewalk. Would do again tomorrow.

I got mine out when I was like 16-17ish, which is viewed as being older for that surgery.

I wasn't out of commission for the full 2 weeks, but at least a week and a half. But I've always been fast at recovery for some reason. But recovery is kinda rough, but not horrible. Just take the medicine, sit on couch or in bed, watch TV or sleep. The first few days it's hard to get anything in your system, including soft foods. I lived on the good ice from sonic or canes and Blue Bell Bullets for the first few days. Felt great on your throat and melting down... Almost kinda numbed it. I also remember loving the cold pack they sent me home with.

Then by the 3rd or 4th day I was able to eat more soft foods. My moms mashed potatoes never tasted so good! I did lose 13lbs in weight due to it.

But it worked. I used to get strep throat / tonsillitis like 5x a year, and it was severe tonsillitis / strep. Haven't had it since. So if you get strep or tonsillitis a good bit, I recommend doing it because it def makes a difference.

I shadowed an ENT physician earlier this summer. He stressed about how much worse it is for adults. It will more than likely take the entire time to recover. Good luck and do everything they tell you

My wife was 30ish when she had hers out. Her family has a history of throat cancers. We did it as a preventative. She was in bed for just under 4 weeks. 2nd week was the worst.

My older brother did. After he got home he started bleeding real bad and we had to take him back to the hospital. He filled up a coffee can full of blood before we got to the emergency room. I was sitting in the back seat asking my mom if he was going to die before we got there

I was about 33 when I had mine removed; I needed about a week to get right. But I'm a tough sumbeech.

You will never forget the smell/taste of your own insulted throat tissue.

It beat the hell out of chronic sore throats, etc.

Don't know how I forgot about this...

Well I had a pretty hot nurse looking after me before surgery. Like 27ish, dark hair, great body and looked sexy as hell in scrubs(looked like Lacy Chabert, but not that fine). And right before I went under I remember thinking "damn she's fine". And I woke up earlier than they thought I would after the surgery, I was the only person awake in the Post OP room for some time. And you bleed a lot during the surgery. So when I woke up, the same hot nurse was giving me a sponge bath on my chest due to the bleeding. And she saw me wake up and smiled and in my drug endured state I basically said, very smoothly I might add, "Hey baby... You're bathing the wrong half of my body."

She's loved me ever since Only reason I know about it is because she brings it up every time I go to the doctors office.

Do the pain meds do nothing to help out? About 2x per year I get really bad throat issues, like strep, but not strep. I'm miserable for 4-5 days. Not sure if I would rather deal with this every year or ask my doctor if I can get tonsils taken out. Two weeks off work doesn't sound too bad though!
