What a terrible summer for movies. I miss the days where every single Friday a new huge movie was released. Now, the movies this summer have been absolutely garbage.

Let's see the big blockbuster movie coming out this friday

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Hundred-Foot Journey
Into the Storm
Step Up All In
What If

August is the end of the summer movie season. All the big movies come out in May.

You sure you want to make such a blanket statement?

It's pretty evident when the highest grossing film domestically as of August has made only $260MM.

I didn't think it was that bad.

Captain America, Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Edge of Tomorrow were all pretty good I thought.

I think it was a lot better than last summer.

It's a shame Edge of Tomorrow did so poorly domestically, as that was one of the most inventive and well-made action films of the past decade. It's killing overseas, so it is still profitable, but a movie that good should have been a no doubt about it hit. That way, Hollywood would make more good, original movies.

I haven't seen Snowpiercer, but I've heard similar things about it as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America
Edge of Tomorrow
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Days of Future Past
22 Jump Street
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Hercules
Lucy

Were all apparently pretty good.

Now that you've made me think about it - it's actually been one of the better summers CONSISTENTLY showing decent movies throughout in a while.

EoT was really the best movie of the summer, IMO.

Godzilla
X-Men: Days of Future Past
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Edge of Tomorrow
Maleficent
22 Jump Street
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy

All very strong and highly-rated films.
Worst summer lineup ever.

Doesn't stand up with 2010 at all, does it?

Iron Man 2
Robin Hood (lol)
Shrek Forever After ( )
Sex and the City 2
Prince of Persia
Get Him to the Greek
The A-Team (mfw)
The Karate Kid (nope)
Winter's Bone
Toy Story 3
Knight and Day
Grown Ups
The Last Airbender ( )
Despicable Me
Inception
Salt
The Expendables
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

But hey, quantity over quality, amirite?

ETA: Bolded means good

Looking back on 2010 - Scott Pilgrim has aged the best and was probably the best all around film.

Looking at those two lists, I think 2014 might be the better one. I wouldn't really count Winter's Bone as a "summer blockbuster" either. If we're claiming that for 2010, then 2014 gets to claim Boyhood... but I think we're then talking about something different than blockbusters.

2013, by contrast, made more money but that list of film is ugly. I like Iron Man 3, but it's the weakest of the trilogy. Monsters U is a competent sequel, but its not great. Despicable Me 2 is the only movie in the top 10 I'd recommend without reservation.
