New York has some affordable suburbs. When people talk about how expensive it is to live in New York, they're usually referring to Manhattan. Also, unless that house is in a really bad neighborhood, he got it for a steal.

But he lives in NJ. That's like saying Algiers is NOLA because you can commute to CBD in fifteen minutes. You do not live in the city at all.

Yea, it's because he doesn't live in the city. He lives in fricking New Jersey.

I have two friends who live in the city. One pays 2800/month for a 600 sq ft. studio apartment (with a doorman) around 32nd and 1st. I have another that pays 1600/month for a non-door man 280 sq ft. apt on the upper east side.

That shite is ridiculous.

Exactly. Man, housing in New Orleans is cheap, just look at my new house in Chalmette!

Baton Rouge is a bargain, I got a huge home in Scotlandville for almost nothing!

Restaurants, groceries, transportation, entertainment. Those are all higher. Some significantly higher.

When did he move?

I lived on the UWS about 10 years ago. My first apt was ~700 sqf for $2300. Great area, door man, all that jazz. 10 years ago!

My second apt was further up the upper west side (bordering harlem) ~475 sqf, $1200-$1300.... and it was subsidized grad student housing.

That's about right for a good area in Manhattan. Though, if you are willling to have roommates, you can get a nice 3 bedroom for 5k (about 1700 a person), which should be affordable with the right occupation.

Kind of a big deal. There's a reason the King of Queens lived in Queens and not Manhattan. Back in the mid 90's I visited some friends that were paying $2800 per month for a 2 BR apt in Manhattan that was smaller than my $600 per month 2 BR in Baton Rouge. It's too expensive to own a car unless you're an OT Baller and you're expected to tip for everything.
