Did Texas kill an innocent man?

Warning: Extremely long article.
quote:
For more than 20 years, the prosecutor who convicted Cameron Todd Willingham of murdering his three young daughters has insisted that the authorities made no deals to secure the testimony of the jailhouse informer who told jurors that Willingham confessed the crime to him.
Since Willingham was executed in 2004, officials have continued to defend the account of the informer, Johnny E. Webb, even as a series of scientific experts have discredited the forensic evidence that Willingham might have deliberately set the house fire in which his toddlers were killed.
But now new evidence has revived questions about Willingham’s guilt: In taped interviews, Webb, who has previously both recanted and affirmed his testimony, gives his first detailed account of how he lied on the witness stand in return for efforts by the former prosecutor, John H. Jackson, to reduce Webb’s prison sentence for robbery and to arrange thousands of dollars in support from a wealthy Corsicana rancher. Newly uncovered letters and court files show that Jackson worked diligently to intercede for Webb after his testimony and to coordinate with the rancher, Charles S. Pearce Jr., to keep the mercurial informer in line.

Texas Monthly had a long article on this a while back and I think a news mag program did a piece on it. What it really shows is how forensic evidence is often bullshite and is far from an exact science...and when you get out in the sticks it gets even dicier. Also, it's cops assuming guilt based off of how the suspected acted - he didn't act like they thought he should have so they went full bore to kill him. Tragic story.

Govt. cannot be trusted to kill people. Abolish the death penalty.

Probably a lot more than one.

And, I honestly believe the guy was innocent. If enough waves are made, this might be the case that reforms the death penalty.

Probably dozens. And they wasted tons of money doing it.

The death penalty should be privatized. Just set up a Dexter shop for hire.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE???

I'm waiting for the Supremes to reverse course on that whole cruel and unusual thing.
Texas is probably the worst of the worst when it comes to the death penalty. Kill them first, deny he evidence later.
Texas will never reform unless forced.

Adamantly opposed to the death penalty

It's almost cost prohibitive. But, some people insist on it.
I do want to note that not one single death-penalty supporter has posted in this thread.

I would say that it IS cost prohibitive. With the number of convictions DNA has overturned, the various claims of prosecutorial misconduct that come to light, and the prolific cost of the legal process, I am stunned that anyone supports the death penalty.

Oh, that Hammurabi bullshite runs rampant with a lot of southern conservatives.

I live in TX, love the state, but I do not like their brand of law and order...It's law and order as determined by a bunch of yahoos that will lie in the aftermath in the face of proof that, not only were they wrong but they knowingly fudged the evidence and hid exculpatory evidence.

Like most fanatics, they tend to ignore information that contradicts their world view.
Don't worry though. Just wait until the next time somebody is accused of a heinous crime. They will be back in full force bitching about how the accused doesn't deserve a trial and that it would be more efficient to let the victims family have at it. All because the police said they did it
