So I spent part of the weekend finally devoting some time to Television. I had to do the same thing a while back with Big Star. Not sure why I ignored them so long considering they are mentioned so often when reading about the bands I like.

Anyway, the thing that finally got me to do so was hearing Days on Sirius. Wow. While I really don't care for Verlaine's vocals(and agree with Lloyd that he may have benefitted from vocal lessons) I could listen to that style of guitar all day long. I really have not spent enough time with Marquee Moon to have favorites, but I'm sure that will happen soon. Not even started on the "reunion" album.

The search led me to this site devoted to Television and Verlaine. Some interesting interviews there, but Verlaine doesn't really reveal much. Not nearly as much as Richard Lloyd(there are multiple parts of these) or Richard Hell. I had never heard of the Heartbreakers or Voidoids.

Listening to Hell, I was surprised to hear his praise for a guitarist I had never heard of- Robert Quine.

I then felt like a complete idiot for not having any idea that both Lloyd and Quine played on so much of Matthews Sweet's stuff.

Sick of Myself with Lloyd

You always hear about CBGB's, Punk and that scene. Reading up on all this stuff has given me a new appreciation for it all. I also learned about way more connections to later musicians I listen to all the time. Would love to see your views on the music, connections, etc.

welcome to the party

the recording lineup for those early 90's Matthew Sweet records was awesome... great power pop!

The drummer during those recordings, Ric Menck, was also in the Velvet Crush, another underrated power pop band..
Always loved their version of this Gene Clark classic..

Don't. It's awful. Well, unless you mean Blank Generation, the documentary.

Television is a great band, but I had no idea Lloyd played on Matthew Sweet's Girlfirend album. Very cool. I'm a huge fan Richard Hell. The Voidoids were great.

I think I could suffer through it.

This is interesting. I have listened to all his youtube interviews twice now. What I get from him is, he had no interest in being good at any instrument, yet insisted on being the leader in any band he was in. Almost makes me think of that non-music playing dude in The Brian Jonestown Massacre or that Flave guy with the clock on his chest. I never could get a feel for why he is famous or how he would even attract other musicians.

Musicianship is overrated in rock n roll. This ain't jazz. In fact, complexity is often the enemy of a great rock n roll band. Guitarists, left to their own devices, will destroy rock n roll. Hell is pretty much a Malcolm McLaren who didn't sit on the sidelines. By sheer force of personality, he was able to form these bands and he pretty much created the aesthetic of the CBGB/Max's scene. He's definitely one of the guys who gets a lot of the credit of punk's DIY roots. He was a poet who just one day decided to be a rock star. Though I think he's obviously a better writer than musician.

And Blank Generation is one of the best rock songs ever conceived.
