The Belgian-style beer garden planned for CitiPlace Court is finally on track to move forward, according to local bar entrepreneur Tom Ange, who also owns The Cove in the same development. The new bar, which is now called Corporate Brew and Draft Baton Rouge, should be on track to open around Sept. 1.

The bar was called Hofbrauhause Rouge in previous reports, but owners changed the name.

The bar concept will include an arcade area, about 100 draught taps and a nano-brewhouse, which means Corporate Brew and Draft will be able to offer its own beers in the future. That aspect of the new bar, Ange said, will likely not be up and running until January.

Details haven't yet been hammered down for the brewhouse, but at least some focus will be on "extreme stuff" not offered by other local brewers as well as seasonal offerings. Each batche of beer will be limited to a few hundred gallons.

Because of the close proximity to Ange's other bar, the draft room at The Cove will close down.

"We couldn't expand and do anymore here (at The Cove)," Ange said. "The landlord gave me the deal for the two suites. ... The draft room here will become a game room."

Ange hopes his new bar can have a broad appeal and is thus banning smoking inside the beer garden unlike The Cove, which still allows cigarettes, cigars and vaporizers. The switch falls in line with a recent trend in Baton Rouge, which sees new bars prohibiting the practice.

Corporate Brew and Draft will also offer some prepackaged bar snacks like chips and pretzels and will not have a kitchen.

Construction is set to begin this week, Ange said, and he hopes the bar will be open sooner than September in time to welcome returning LSU students.

Maybe this has been discussed somewhere already, but somehow I am just finding out about this update. Actually, I was recently wondering if this thing was still a go.

All the bolded stuff is new information, IIRC.

I'm most intrigued by the nano-brewhouse aspect. Anybody know who will be doing the brewing? I know one of the bartenders at The Cove is active in Redstick Brewmasters, so that is my first guess.

Cool news, the right kind of backer to make this happen. Would be better downtown, but this is great news.

I don't see them lasting unless they install their own brewery.

100 taps? That's too many, no?

Does PH still force its customers to buy food in order to get select beers?

Nah, it has an appeal that Bulldog/Cove do not. Seems to be different clientele.

My opinion is that it is way to big to market itself as a craft beer bar, but I guess they fill it up a couple times a week so what do I know.

Not exactly the same model, so not really sure. It should bring more beer-drinkers overall to Citiplace IMO. Whether it is enough for each place to succeed, IDK.

The draft room in the cove may be approaching that number right now. It's a lot.

So, winning home brewer recipe for sale on tap? Wasn't this in the original plans for Pelican House?

Can you explain what you mean by this? Because a place has a lot of floor space it can't be a good beer bar? That's what I read, and I'm not seeing the connection to size and quality.

If you'd made the beer tasting at ru's instead of dawdling your way back from the beach stopping in all those pubs, you'd have been in the know on these things.

FYI, I don't see how it will be able to compete with Running Monk.

Agreed. Running Monk is a formidable entry to the BR market.

Unless Weezy or stinkdog move to BR to help turn over that many taps, he will end up with some skunky beers. What we heard though is that he plans on addressing it by using smaller kegs to create more turnover and change offerings more often. If so, then it could do quite well, although the BRPD's singular focus on pulling over all the hardened criminals leaving the Corporate and Perkins' bars is, ah hem, a sobering thought.

Broad appeal = lowest common denominator = mavens will quickly tire of place = distributors will not continue to provide good taps = buffalo wild wings

Rouge, we were talking about that. We are all doubting that there are enough mavens to support that many taps, and seriously, between the new ABC commissioner making political hay for bigger things and the BR po po deploying all their resources to the safe (and profitable) side of the tracks, it won't be easy. It's been tough trying to get friends of mine to move from BMC swill even in baby steps like Canebrake.
