We know lots of examples of families of politicians profiting from their name and/or their access to political power.

Who can forget Billy Carter working for the Libyans? or Trent Lott resigning the day his brother in law Dickie Scruggs was found guilty of bribing a judge--(Dickie made a fortune representing Mississippi against tobacco companies while letting Janet Reno bare the expenses of the pursuit of the companies.) or Marion and Edwin Edwards and the nursing homes? Mary and Frank Snelling?--(Frank has made a couple of real estate deals representing lobbyists) and Bobby and Nikesh?--(Nikesh conveniently found employment in Gibson and Dunn who represents BP in lawsuits pertaining to the spill and represents film and media companies)

Do you think these profitable connections are ethical? Do you find it offputting? Should such things be outlawed?

Just curious.

I think they just get so wrapped up the money and power around them they lose perspective. The lines they will not cross are fewer.

We send good people to office and they become slimy politicians.

These days the families benefit from not profiting. Well, in that they set up non- profits and are paid out of that.

Also, there's a well known ring of Indian doctors that have a racket going serving people with mental problems and getting reimbursed by the state through federal programs. Blatant pill-pushing, hiring uncertified social workers on the cheap and billing the state, never get investigated or questioned by the state. Probably some of the richest people in a Louisiana now. Good for them, I guess.

Those "non profits" are multi million dollar enterprises.

I disagree. We send narcissists to office and they get worse.

Kirchners from Argentina went from 2 million to 17 million net worth. And Argentina is a poor country.

I have no problem with politicians making a profit in theory.
because to me, we elect them to represent us with the idea that they're the best to do it(in theory).

just like any other industry, the best make the most money. also, we forget that these men and women do work. whether or not congress is "doing anything", a lot of them work tirelessly while in office

You poor, pathetic naive child.

Let Zach splain it to you simply:

When a politicians says "I've been called to public service" he/she really means "I want to get rich on the public's dime without really working."

Government officials need a stripping off all property rights. Let them take a poverty vow in order to actually protect our property rights.

You need to look up the salaries of those non profit ceo's. The only one non profit leader is the Salvation Army. He earns 12k per yr. gets a housing allowance. I think the lady at united way makes around 400k
