Hard drive disposal question..

Would a couple screw driver holes be sufficient enough to be able to throw a hard drive in the trash?? More worried about identity theft stuff with the hard drive and just wasn't sure to what length to go to when throwing a hard drive away.. TIA!!

seems a little excessive but yea it should work.
I just toss mine in the woods and let mother nature handle bizness

Id smash it if I had anything I was worried about on if.

Look for a tool called Dban. It will fully wipe the drive to where it's unusable.

I smashed it.... Has 3 large screw driver holes.. Should be fine I suppose!!

Careful, dumpster divers might still recover a few 4kb blocks in their cleanroom.
Single-pass delete. That's all you need to do, unless you work for DoD and the hdd contains any DoD data that must adhere to their secure erase standards.

several holes in the platters will be enough. a secure wipe is better and shredding is obviously the best. but unless the dumpster diver has an electron microscope, he aint reading your data if the platters have holes in them.

I take mine apart, use the platters as a new set of drink coasters and toss the rest.

After zeroing the drive if possible, cut the ribbon cables, tear off the heads, scratch the shite out of the platters, and bend those frickers with a pair of pliers until they turn no more. Remove and keep the crazy powerful magnet because "Yeah Bitch, Magnets!". Remove controller board and dispose of separately.
Seriously, the magnets are fun and useful. Stick them on a fridge and ask people to fetch that magnet for you. Use them as a stud finder and to retrieve tiny screws you drop.
Use FDE on every drive so you never have to think about data leakage. This will give peace of mind if you're unable to zero the drive before RMA'ing or getting rid of it. The main reason is to protect against theft, assuming your laptop isn't stolen while sleeping, and no one does the Seinfeld Frogger routine on your sleeping desktop computer.

That's a bit overkill. But I guess much can be said for thoroughness

DBAN or repurpose the drive as external storage if it has any useful life in it. Mechanical corruption isn't really necessary.

Only if I knew what the heck that was...Lol!

You could always call the IRS for tips on this kind of thing. They seem to be experts at making data disappear.

Hammer, goggles, garage floor. That's all I use.
I just keep going until I hear the platter shatter into pieces.
