No reason to have something in the landing area for the players to get injured on... goal, photographers, ball boys, etc.

Materials and technology available today should not allow this hazard to exist.

It is closer in college arenas like T&M.

yep, sometimes the ballboys and cheerleaders are practically on the baseline. I think Alabama or Georgia used to have their students practically on the court behind one of the baskets

Are you saying this from the Paul George injury, I don't want to look at that again. But, did the padded base have something to do with it. I thought he just landed awkwardly.

To be fair I looked at it only once on the replay of ESPN telecast, but I thought it was due to the supports. Don't want to see it again.

Unfortunately, the drop down goals like in high school gyms aren't feasible for these tall arse stadiums, cause that would be an easy fix.

watch it again, he lands right on the bottom pad which causes his foot to stick bringing all his weight on a small part of his tib/fib

Honestly, on most major levels there's a shite ton of people along the baselines. Hell at Vandy the benches are there too.

It was just a freak injury. And if the backstop isn't there, you'll have guys flying into cameramen and media tables more than likely. So it's prevented more injuries then it's caused.

The real only fix would be to bring the backboard and basket further from the base of the whole goal itself

They need to design the goals like Cameron Indoor stadium at Duke and put a padded wall in front of the fans along the baselines.

Vandy has quite a bit of room.

Just move the base further back 5-10 feet and make the support beams longer. Its an easy solution

It should have been done a long time ago. Players fall into that thing all the time.

I prefer Vandy's. A lot less action takes place where their baskets are set up.

eta: I seel volfan beat me to it

Absolutely. After looking at the pictures of options out there, no reason to have the players not have a landing area under the goal.

The daily newspapers, TV reporters, magazine photogs, etc should be moved out. Zoom lenses exist for a reason.

Just saw Brian Windhorst talk about the supports and how they are much closer than normal NBA arenas due to the Vegas site's smaller available footprint.

And just watched it again, he definitely landed on the support padding.

This is probably more dangerous than the current setup
