chicago tribune doing a series on the influx of chinese students at the state's flagship public university. i found the headline eye grabbing. 1 out of every 10 freshmen at the university of illinois urbana champagne are from china.

is this a good thing? should we welcome another nation's money and highest achieving students to study at our best public universities? is this ultimately a good for our economy, as many of these students will likely stay in america after they graduate?

or is it harmful? helping another nation educate its students to the negligence of education our own students? is it a zero sum game where china wins and america loses? or does everyone win by this arrangement?

what would you do if lsu had a similar trend?
if a supporter of foreign students here, would your opinion change if you or your kid got rejected at lsu?

Champaign Urbana is a shite hole. I lived about 35 minutes from there and did not want to go to school there. Great in academics...meh in atmosphere.

If they have the grades and test scores to be accepted, I'm ok with it

I'm okay with it as long as they learn and can speak english well. There's nothing worse in grad school than dealing with other grad students that you can't understand what they are saying

Iowa has the same thing going on. I think there is actually a satellite office in Beijing now.

If you guys want a good read on a little known, yet fricked up school massacre, read up on Gang Lu, Chinese born Physics PhD candidate at Iowa in he early Nineties. Lu killed four faculty, one student, and himself after failing to win a prestigious award for his dissertation. The prize was $2,500.00.

Decent book on the subject called Deadly Scholarship

If companies are willing to hire them then it's a good thing. When I was in grad school, the Chinese people were the smartest, and worked the hardest.

Totally agree. We get applicants all the time with promising resumes as far as recent college grads go but their English is so bad I can hardly schedule an interview over the phone with them.

usually engineering students from China is more than academically qualified to study here. if they're here that means they already competed and passed the preliminary round in their home country with other students. they wound't send special ed Chang here.

yes. As long as the entrance requirements are equal I don't see why anyone would care.

We have american students that get into universities that don't meet the requirements others have to.

The Asian food in Atlanta is incredible, though, if you go to the right places. So that helps.
