Just caught this on tv. Originally skipped it because it got such horrible reviews. While certainly flawed (Mila Kunis was terrible as the wicked witch), I thought it was highly entertaining. Why such hate from the critics?

Also, any news on a sequel. It sucks that they are limited by the copyrights on the original movie by MGM.

It was pretty generic.

Nothing really stood out.

Yea I mean it was alright, I called Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch the first time she was on screen, I am proud of that

Well she was a witch who clearly wasn't glinda, and this was an origin movie soo...there were definitely some hints.

I thought it was okay. The huge problem is trying to separate it from 1939 and The Wizard of Oz, which I think too may people cannot do. Oz will always be Judy Garland for most and is why things like Return to Oz and this movie universally get a, "Meh," from critics.

I guess the general consensus is that it was "meh" when it couldve been great?

I kinda feel like nothing could ever live up to the original though so I feel like critics are going to be overly critical of any wizard of oz genre movies instead of taking it for what its worth as a solidly entertaining disney venture.

I liked it a good bit. Recommended it to people, so enough to do that.

Not to hijack my own thread but...

Its always been interesting to me that the original Wizard of Oz, which i think is a top 5 movie of all time did not win best picture. It lost out to Gone With the Wind, which I think is HIGHLY overrated. Even so, that 1939 academy awards was stacked.

No, GWTW is the better picture. Many great performances (if not performances of a lifetime) in that movie. Not to take anything away from Oz, which is also exceptional, but I think the right choice was made.

I thought Kunis and Weisz were the best part and the only actors that seemed like they were having fun with their roles throughout.

Franco and Williams seemed to have issues w/acting on so much green screen and gave pretty dull performances.

Braff's flying monkey was annoying.

Oddly enough, I thought the best scene in the entire movie was when we find out China Girl has broken legs and the Franco fixes them w/glue.

Also, the wicked witch face looked awful, and with all the CGI background parts of it felt like I was watching a video game

Fair. But the fact that you could have two of the top 10 movies of all time in the same year is mind boggling.

And I would argue that the cinematic experience of the black and white into the technicolor oz made the overall movie better than what is the superior pure acting of GWTW. The visuals of TWOO are still stunning today

this is what I disliked the most about the flick.

waaaaay too much CGI and a lot of it just didnt look all that good.

maybe it looked better in 3D?

regardless, its not going to age well at all.

Am I the only one that thought Kunis looked hotter after she changed?
