Are the ones from Florida not safe to eat until the fall? Has anybody else put eating them on hold until then? Just wondered since I'll be going to Perdido Key on August 20th.

I saw a story this week warning of a vibrio issue with Gulf oysters...at least a risk. I rarely eat Gulf oysters raw in the summer months...but it's a taste preference more than anything else.

I only eat oysters during months that have an "r" in it

I'm probably in the minority though but that's just my preference

I wouldn't do it. Oyster sick is a whole other level of sickness that you don't want to experience.

I had some awesome Apalachicola oysters last Thursday. I am still alive.

Eat them. You are fine. Now, the issue with eating them in summer months is that they arent as great tasting as they are in say January. Sure there is always a risk with consuming raw seafood, but it isnt any greater than say driving

I have a similar rule, I only eat oysters on days that end in "y"

I'll just wait until next month to eat them. Of course I had some oysters a couple weeks ago in Ozark, Al. Which is 1 1/2 hrs from PCB. I'm still here. But yea, the months with a "r" in them have the best oysters

This. That whole ends in"r" thing is an urban legend (at least today) that I believe spawned from poor storage techniques in transit. I believe I read that somewhere. I've eaten plenty of oysters during the summer and never had a problem.

The difference in an August and a September oyster aint going to amount to a hill of beans. A letter in a month is not going to miraculously change the flavor or lessen the risk of eating a raw oyster. Those factors will be affected by water temp. August and February? Lot of difference. August and September/October, not so much.

vibrio is pretty much a warm weather thing, so that's a legitimate reason for not eating them if you are being super-careful. they also taste better in cooler months.

I think something like 50ppl/yr have issues with this due to oysters (and it's mainly in the summertime), and any real issues are super-concentrated to ppl with chronic diseases, especially ones with liver issues.

I'll wait to Casamentos opens

I did surf fish about a half dozen times last week without dying. Maybe it was the dolphins that were eating all my throw backs that kept me safe.

I had oysters like a week ago. They were solid. Not as plump as I'd like, but I have no regrets. I'm not dead yet.
