I'm finally moving to a place with a backyard where I can have a dog! What are some of the OT's favorite breeds for outdoor dogs in South Louisiana?

Some helpful information: backyard is kinda small. I work full time so the dog is going to have to be able to handle being by itself most of the day. No kids, doesn't have to be a guard dog.

Manchester Terrier.
Very smart and active but not outrageously so.

If you have the time and energy, Border Collies are the best dogs on the planet.

SO has bad pet allergies. It's not gonna happen unless I find a mythical hypoallergenic dog that doesn't shed.

My sister in law has one of these. They actually exist.

Rat Terrier (the large Decker variety not the yippy yappy toy ones). Best all around dog; tough as nails, athletic, snake/vermin killing machines, great watchdogs, good with kids, love the water & outdoor activities, perfect size to travel with, & adapt well to being a house dog or an inside/outside dog.

Ok, looking it up. The house could support a dog seeing as it has hardwood floors throughout as long as I could keep it off the furniture and install some good air purifiers, but it seems like I'd have to put waaaaay more work into keeping the dog clean.

Wikipedia says that they don't cope well with being alone for long stretches of the day, so that's a non-starter.

I love my Border Collie. A great breed - number 1 in most lists of the most intelligent dogs. They take a lot of energy though - I have to throw mine a frisbee about 40-60 times a day, even in hot weather. Mine also works with kids who are scared of dogs, usually because they have been bitten. She is the most bullet proof dog ever regarding kids.

Go to the pound or find one online from a rescue organization.

I found mine online and we setup a meet and greet and an overnight visit. He's been with me ever since.

I had 3 at one time. Sadly, only one is still alive, but she's awesome (except for the excessive barking when someone knocks on the door).
