WASHINGTON — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released in a prisoner swap with the Taliban two months ago, will meet next week with the senior Army officer investigating the circumstances of his capture in Afghanistan, his lawyer said Wednesday.
Bergdahl, who spent five years in captivity, plans to meet with Army Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl, the investigating officer, in San Antonio, where Bergdahl is stationed, according to lawyer Eugene Fidell.
“We are all looking forward to having this over, so he can get on with his life,” Fidell said.
The Army is trying to determine whether Bergdahl deserted his post or wandered off temporarily and was seized by Taliban militants battling the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether Bergdahl will be punished, and if so, how severely.
The Army said after his return that it did not want to interrogate Bergdahl until he had rest, counseling and time to recover from his ordeal. The Army sergeant has declined to discuss his captivity publicly.

Well now that he's out carousing at McDonald's and the like, it's good to hear that they are *getting around to it*

Not just getting around to it. Thorough and methodical investigation of facts.
Justice will come.

Has this guy even seen his parents yet? Haven't seen it reported if he has. If he hasn't, then this is one of the strangest things I've ever heard of.

I'm on the fence with this one (and the IRS) TBH. This would be a tether around BHO's neck that he couldn't shake if it comes out he traded the (now) ISIS guys for this deserter. I think the Admin will be methodical on this.

Trust me, they are methodically building their case. No need to hurry. Get it done right.

My point was how is "temporarily" leaving your post and base...not considered desertion? or at least dereliction of duty?

I think they will refer charges against him (when the investigation is complete) and the defense will plea bargain during discovery. Dishonorable discharge, reduction to E1, forfeiture of pay and allowances. No jail time (in my opinion).
Ace Midnight, your expert opinion?

They have to prove desertion beyond a reasonable doubt. You do not go forward (if you are smart) in a situation like this if you cannot win in a courts martial. They are building the case. You cannot appear to arriving at a pre-determined outcome in the UCMJ process (research the concept of "undue command influence").
Anticipate that Bergdahl will refuse to answer questions (as is his right) and they will review the findings and (eventually) recommend a trial by courts martial (my opinion).

Yeah, the narrative is being created as we speak. That's their story and they're sticking to it.
I don't know why they're even going to all the bother. As much as his defenders don't want people to prejudge his guilt, they're unwilling to admit that his "innocence" has already been predetermined.
No way this administration takes the hit on this one. They'll be pinning a Silver Star on this a-hole by the time all is said and done.
