In a spin-off to the Bull Durham thread, why can't Hollywood make a great football movie?

Leatherheads? Terrible.
Any Given Sunday? Almost unwatchable.
Varsity Blues? Please
The Program? Nope.
Little Giants? Rick Moranis = not watchable
Rudy? Give me a break.

Has there ever been a quality movie about football the way there has been about baseball?

Remember the Titans was decent. Friday Night Lights was decent as well. The Blind Side was pretty good.

If you don't love Remember the Titans and Varsity Blues, then we can't be friends.

The Replacements - Awesome
Remember the Titans - really secondary as a "football" movie, but still good.
Garbage Picking, Field Goal kicking Philly Phenom - Great
Invincible - Really good too

I think it is tough to make football look good on screen without it looking staged or fake.

Baseball doesn't have this problem.

The Comebacks is my favorite movie

No one mention Rudy? But like someone else pointed out that really wasn't about actual football action.

What about Any Given Sunday?

This actually is a genuinely great movie for any genre. It's debatable how much of a "football" movie it is though.
