Went there two years ago on vacation. Still one of my favorites so far. We did white water rafting which was a lot of fun. Visited the stores and stuff in Boone. App State is located there and it is a very pretty campus. Tons of hiking to do. Drove to Asheville one day to visit the Biltmore estate as well. Very fun trip, you will love it.

Go visit local cemetaries and see my "kins" plots - my grandpa moved to GWN to grow tobacco in the 30s and pretty much all my relatives are in the area. Cant swing a cat w/o htting a stanley headstone

We spent a lot of time in Blowing Rock when we lived in TN, and it's a beautiful little mountain town. Grandfather Mountain isn't too far and is pretty cool.

We never did do any white water rafting in the area, but I know there are several places around there. There's also tons of hiking in the area.

Grandfather Mountain that has been mentioned already is a nice area. If you are staying in Banner Elk (or close by) there used to be a really good French restaurant called Morel's.

There is also a pretty cool park/zoo near Grandfather Mountain, I'm drawing a blank on the name, but it is very pretty and one of the places where they filmed Forest Gump running through the mountains.
