Car Buying Fees

I see lots of threads on here about negotiating prices, but I have seen the Administrative aka Document Fees climbing higher and higher. This is something dealerships are not negotiating on, in my experience. What used to hover around $300 has now doubled to $599 is some cases.
Has anyone had success in negotiating these down or eliminating them entirely? Do you discuss it only after agreeing on a price for the vehicle?
TIA

On my current truck we settled on a price and they tried to add on around $500 in fees when it came time to sign everything. I just told them that it was a deal breaker for me and I would walk if the charges weren't removed.

Everything is negotiable. Just have to be seriously willing to walk.

if this was not disclosed in writing as we were negotiating, I would walk.

Doc fees have changed in La in recent years. It used to be non negotiable in La because it was discriminatory to charge one customer a higher fee than others. Over the past few years it has become negotiable, but if dealers charge a doc fee once, then they have to charge some doc fee to all customers. Currently in La the largest legal doc fee is $100. That just recently got approved to increase. Don't remember when it becomes active, I think the new max fee will either be $150 or $200. A dealer could always discount the car a few bucks if a customer is pissed about the fee.
