Posted by Spaulding Smails on 7/29/14 at 11:07 pm00
Traffic is one of the greatest bands of all time and Steve Winwood is one cool dude. One of the most talented guys around.
If you agree, post your favorite Traffic songs or Steve Winwood songs. Blind Faith and Spencer Davis Group are welcomed as well
Traffic-Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Traffic & Jerry Garcia-Dear Mr. Fantasy
Steve Winwood-Back in the High Life
Blind Faith-Can't Find My Way Home
and of course
Steve Winwood-Pie of Love

Light Up Or Leave Me Alone is the GOAT.
Also Page and Trey sat in with WSP in LA '93 (I think) and did Low Spark. It is pretty great

On ElectricLadyland he played organ on Voodoo Chile.
He also sang backup on All along the Watchtower plus a few other songs.

Nice.

I could start an entirely new thread on the subject, but I'll keep it here to tie it in with Steve.
It is something truly unique about the 60's-70's music scene where all these extremely talented artists wanted to perform with each other and make great music. They all sat in with each other on some of the most famous songs of the era, and made supergroups, who were just as impressive as their own respective groups (Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes, etc.)
I'm sure it happens a lot now, being most prevalent in the jam scene, but it's nothing like it was back then

Back then if the other musicians weren't on the same label, some companies would flat out refuse or ask a huge amount of money for their service.
But, it still happened, a lot.

Here's my take on the Winwood - although he's thought of, mainly, as a keyboardist, he's a talented multi-instrumentalist in the same category as guys like Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, Prince and Dave Grohl. On his second and third solo albums, Arc of a Diver and Talking Back to the Night - he played every single instrument.
Now, back to his beginnings - he was a rock star, touring the world at 14. He had already been in The Spencer Davis Group, quit and formed Traffic by the time he was 18. He formed a supergroup (Blind Faith) with Eric Clapton before his 21st birthday.
That puts him in rarefied company, talent wise.

quote:Unfortunately, I was exposed to this before I knew of anything before. Not really sure how that happened, but I was not a fan of that stuff and thought of him about like Howard Jones. Took a while for me to get over it.
