Smart Blue Ray DVD player vs. Roku/Chromecast, etc: advice?

getting ready for football season. we get Dish but no movie channels. Netflix uses a Wii on an ancient Vizio but I want to make smart TVS for the Watch ESPN app for what's coming up w/ the SEC TV network on at least one other TV. Once in a blue moon we'll watch a DVD when my daughter comes over w/ one of her collection, but mainly we watch Netflix. Should I get a smart blue ray player? or Roku? if the DVD, what specs am I looking for? not a gamer at all.

Roku or AppleTV, the smart disc players and TV's are painfully slow, IMO.

If you are going to use it for WatchESPN and Netflix, just get Chromecast. If you will be using it for a lot more, get something like FireTV or Roku. I have the FireTV and love it. Will be installing XBMC on it soon.

chromecast does alot more than that.
with plex, i have full access to all my downloaded 1080p MKV BD rips on my PC and the integration with pandora & google music are awesome as well as being able to mirror your android screen.
i'm finding it hard to find something i can't do with chromecast these days.

What I was saying is that if he was only going to use it for that, to get the cheapest option. If he had other things in mind, it would change the answer depending on the desired task.

Definitely get a Roku or Chromecast. TV and Blu-ray apps universally suck.

Roku3 or Amazon fire. I got the Roku3 a few weeks ago and love it.
