Looking for a new mattress, display price includes box spring and when I asked me how much for just the mattress they took off like $200.

Are box springs necessary? Can I go without one or just pick one up for $15 at a Goodwill? What do they do?

That's what I got out of it scanning the topic name.

ETA: I RA'd to move this thread to the OT. No big deal.

My answer: I don't have one, but simply because my bed frame has a rib cage-style bottom to it. All the box spring does is add some height, and make sure your mattress lays evenly across the frame. If your bed frame already has a highly-supportive structure in place, that also adds some height, I'd say box springs are not necessary.

ETA2: This is what the inside of my bed frame looks like.

Les Miles would say, "No way on god's green earth eould you ever catch me buying a used mattress or box springs...NASTY......it might even be illegal to sell such."

They support the mattress and make it last longer. If you have a crappy box spring, your mattress will have to be replaced sooner. Worth it in the long run.

We have a platform bed and do not have a box spring. Never heard a legitimate reason for one if you bed can evenly support the mattress already.

if you are using a regular bed frame you will need something below the matress so it doesn't fall through, like a box spring, or even a sheet of plywood would probably be just fine.

The box spring does help put the bed at more normal height for getting in and out of bed.

we have two beds in our house with no box spring. I put a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood under them.

For warranty purposes, you might need to have it on a box spring...but who has ever used a mattress warranty

You absolutely need them unless you are putting your mattress on the floor. Cheap ones are fine though.

Get a tempurpedic.

Wait, just realized you are talking about getting a used box spring at a thrift store. Perhaps you should check eBay for an old therma-rest.

I have a platform bed. When they delivered, I had told them I didn't need the box spring. They gave me a $200 credit also.
