If you drive a Nissan Pathfinder or Frontier, you may want to check for fluidmix

Serious issue affecting late 00's Nissan trucks (some Titans have issue but rare)
Mostly pathfinders and Frontiers with the 4.0 V6.
Issue is the radiator leaks fluid into the transmission cooler and this causes both the radiator and the transmission to fail and for you to get gunk in your engine.
NOW, Nissan did extend the warranty for this issue to 80,000 miles. So if you drive any of these trucks, you need to either check your radiator cap for what looks like strawberry milk or put a stick in your coolant reservoir to see if there is any brownish sludge in there.
Some early symptoms are:
Shuddering at low RPMS.
Missed gear shifts or hard shifts
Heater not working
Engine overheats
The pathfinder had a handful of times it rumbled in gear. We have a trip planned next week so I went out to change every non-hydraulic fluid and all the filters.
As soon as I took the cap off the radiator I saw the milky stuff.
After looking that up, I found about the extended warranty.
Nissan calls this morning.
Car is getting new transmission, new radiator and new sensors and transmission cooler.
If you have a R51 type Pathfinder you need to check your fluid, if you do not have contamination, have a mechanic change your radiator now.
The stock one will fail. If you are over 80,000 miles there is a $2k co-pay over 90,000 miles $3k co-pay. Over 100,000 miles no warranty protection.
This issue will cause $6,000 dollars of damage and should be a recall.
We tool the SUV in at 79,494 miles. Had we waited a week it would of cost us an extra $2,000.
(as of now it's free)
So be proactive. Check for this issue if you have or know someone with these trucks/suvs.

But you should really check for this ASAP if you drive an affected vehicle and report it to the NHSTA, this SHOULD be a recall.

A guy I know had this issue last year. Finally just got rid of his Frontier for a new Corolla. He put a lot of money into that truck.

My pathfinder did the same thing. Thankfully I caught it very early. I flushed the transmission and radiator, then did the bypass mod. I was at 100k so Nissan was no help. Its a shame that an otherwise stout truck soured me on Nissan. Should have been a recall.

I have the same issue, just found out last week. I'm at 85000 miles, so it would be $2500 to fix. I'm looking to trade in before transmission is completely fried. It fricking sucks. frick Nissan. Never again.

this is the only time we really see Nissan transmissions the water getting into the unit makes it an expensive rebuild because of the valve body you have to purchase a whole new valve body with computer and solenoids. Cost of valve body is 1500. Average cost to rebuild one is 3800. Then add the radiator and now your total comes to 4200 plus tax

I'm at just over 78k on my 05 Frontier. I do not have this issue. What is the bypass mod?

Good post and thanks for the info... Do you know up to what madel year this is an issue? I have an '11 frontier 4x4 with the 4.0 V6.

As long as you have the auxiliary trans cooler, you don't even need to use the radiator cooler. Trans temps will stay the same. Basically, you bypass the radiators trans oil cooler. Its actually a simple, 20 min job, and it makes 100% sure you can't have the contamination issue.

After reading your post, I went outside and checked my radiator cap and it was clean. I have an 08 Pathfinder with 105,000 miles. The only early symptom that I had was the rough idle, but I had that fixed a few months ago before the car went out of warranty. The dealership said it was idling to low and adjusted it, its been good since then.
My question is, if I have that many miles and my radiator is clean, and I good? Are there any others tests I can do? I don't want to go change my radiator just for the hell of it. Could I still possibly have this issue without any signs after 105K miles?

Does this effect the 2012 Frontier? Still has the 4.0 V6, but hopefully it has been hashed out.

The problem is due to an internal crack in the radiators. You will remain vulnerable unfortunately.

I found this classaction lawsuit regarding this issue, however it's already past the deadline so it doesn't do anybody here any good.

I did the trans-cooler bypass a year ago and it is fine. There stupid little trans-cooler performs very little cooling and is intended to pull heat from the radiator to warm up the transmission fluid so cold morning shifts are smoother.
Do it now or blow up your transmission. It took about 30 mins.

We have a '12 Pathfinder. It shudders at low rpm's but not any of the other symptoms. Around 36k miles. Do I need to bring it in to the dealership? What do I need to do to get it checked out?

This has been an issue for several years. I have an '07 XTerra that was having similar issues. At 90,000 miles it seemed the transmission wouldn't engage. I took it in to the geniuses at Royal Nissan and was told the transmission was shot...$9K for a new one or it was over. I was able to barely drive it but took it to a local transmission shop who checked it over and said it was the computer that was out but the transmission was good. $1500 later and now almost 35,000 miles later it's still running like new.
It not the same issue but something to look at.
