Would any of y'all purchase one of these? My Brother in law just bought one for 3500! It's awesome though.

Not as a desktop. For 3500 I would build an incredible machine

I bought a broken m11x r3. Replaced the hard drive with a SSD. Cost me $600 total about 2-3 years ago. Great device

Only if I was a serious gamer...For that price I would get a silly Mac desktop.

I can imagine it being pretty awesome though.

They are just over priced Dell's.
If you are buying a gaming laptop, look at the msi gaming lineup.
If you are buying a gaming desktop, build don't buy. There is no excuse to not build your own when spending that amount of money.

he could likely have built a better one and pocketed ~$1000

Ain't me. I discouraged it. I know that technology changes so quickly that he could have bought a 1000 dollar one and upgrade it every 2 years and be better off.

I've looked at the specs on Alienware computers. He probably could have built the same computer and pocketed closer to $1500.

Build it! It's so easy.

alienware aurora for $800ish is the only correct answer. bought an i7 one for my son and its about a 9.5 out of 10 on the geekiness scale.

badass computer (i know..hardcore gamers build their own)..and if you shop the dell refurb store..these pop up ALL THE TIME for around $1k..and about every other month a 40% off coupon shows up.

helluva deal if you catch it right.

This...my parents have had their last 2 pcs built and the first one lasted around 8-9 years, and this one has been in use since 2009-10 (and runs great).

A little pricey, but for what they need to do, it runs quite incredible.

I'm kinda out of the loop nowadays but can you "build" a laptop?

If you're really that serious about wanting a "gaming" laptop, buy the razor blade if you are willing to shell out the cash.

These computers were the best before Dell bought them out. Now, $3500 is overpaying.

MSI or ASUS. What a ridiculous purchase for school. He could've saved $1,000 by building a more powerful desktop and buying a lower end laptop for student work. Is he trying to play Call of Duty in class?

Won't be top of the line if under $1k, even if refurb or with discounts. It might be closer to a realistic price, though. Maybe.

Building a laptop is not nearly as practical as a desktop. Really, it's not practical at all.
