WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Zach Strief made a bold proclamation Monday, saying, "I think we can be as good as a running team as we have ever been."

And running back Pierre Thomas talked in a similar excited fashion about the run game the other day, saying among other things that, "We are putting in more time on the running game than I have ever seen before."

It would be natural to hear comments like that and be a little skeptical. The Saints seem to talk every summer about putting more emphasis on the run game -- but then the results have been decidedly hit and miss each season.

However, I've begun to sense one big difference while hearing folks talk about the run game this summer: Confidence.

Both Strief and coach Sean Payton sounded Monday like they were very encouraged and energized by the success the Saints started to have in the run game late last season -- especially in their playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

And they seem to genuinely expect that progress to continue in the second year under offensive line coach Bret Ingalls, who introduced more of a zone-running scheme last year.

"I think that Pierre is right," Strief said after the Saints' run blocking was particularly impressive during Monday's practice session. "I think that last year there was kind of a renewed focus, and yet there was a big change that happened last year. I think going into this year there is a lot more understanding, a much better consistent understanding from linemen, tight ends, backs, on what exactly we are doing.

"There's that same emphasis that we had last year. (But) there's a little bit of success early, and I think there is a lot more confidence in it right now. And I think guys are really excited in that part of the practice."

Time to run the option. Drew can do it.

This has me more intrigued than any camp story. Every year we hear from Paeyton that he will commit more to the run game, and every year I don't believe him. Why? Because he never follows through with it. We won the Super Bowl as the number 6 (is that right?) run team in the league, and even then it didn't feel like we were truly committed. We were, obviously, but throughout the season it still felt like we got away from it a lot. Still, we won a Super Bowl and did have a hell of an offense overall, including the run.

This year is a different story. I actually believe it when he says it. Once Armstead took over last season this team became a running team, and we were good. That playoff game against Phi was dominant, and we were running strong with Sea until the fumble. That carryover into this camp along with the players and reporters stressing how much they are focusing on the run game is confidence inspiring. Now I believe it, fully want and support it and think it will happen.

A strong run game to support Brees and the weapons we have along with what I believe will be a top 3 defense = Super Bowl and one of the great teams in the history of the game. Maybe it's just fanboy hype, but this team will be special. As long as nothing crazy happens to us, this will be an epic season

I always thought that when Payton finally decided to repeat the formula of the 09 team, rushing 20-25 times and have Brees throw it 30-35 times instead of 40-50 would lead us back to our 2nd Lombardi

It'll be huge, not having to be right side centric in the run game.

I'm confused. A stupid thread comparing Brees to Luck goes on for pages, and a smart thread about the focusing on the running game and its implications lasts a total of 9 (10) posts. What's wrong with this board? There is so much more here to discuss, yet it's just thrown out for the pigeons to shite on

It must be fun writing the same generic training camp stories every year. Not that you usually have a choice, unless your team drafts Johnny Football.

Start a thread comparing our run game to the Colts'. That should give you the necessary tinder to light a fire on this subject by all implications from this board.

I think there was a 7 pager comparing Reid to Vaccaro a while back.

Because LSU, of course.

Yeah, I don't get why that thread took off. It lost my interest pretty quickly. Training camp is going on. There's real football news. That seems like a dumb off season thread.

well these boards breed stupidity so it's not surprising that a thread like that thrives

Well, for this thread, we just talked about the commitment to the run game.

Recently and for the last few years.
Plus hearing the team saying it'll happen doesn't carry much weight.

That may be why this thread didn't take off.

I think there's some real substance to this one. Run blocking is a strength of everyone on the line this year, which wasn't the case last year (Brown & dlp). Plus we were switching run blocking schemes last year, and npw they're settled into it.

And it's not as if Payton just ignored the run game last year, but there's only so much you could do with a gimpy Evans and Brown/dlp getting blown up in the backfield.

Who's the front-runner in the Center position competition?

Whose job is it to lose/win (if anyone's)?
