Removing the magazine plug from my new 870....

Picked up a new 870 Express last night and I'm installing the magazine plug. The cap will not come off. The manual says to pry it off with a screw driver. Is this the correct way?

Yea, my bad. Think I'll take the gun up to Academy and have the guy at the counter show me how to do it properly.

You should be able to get that retaining cap out with a flathead. Just put it in the slot and pry one side up at a time. And be ready for the long arse spring to come flying out.

Mine have notches that you had to line up to get that orange thing out. If that's what you're talking about.

push the cap down and rotate it 90 degrees then release and everything should come out.

My 870 was new in 1983 so maybe they've changed, but in mine, once you unscrew the end cap, there's a retainer holding the spring in that has holes in it like a snap ring.
