Rio Mar closing
Posted by Oenophile Brah on 7/28/14 at 7:05 pm11
After 14 years, Rio Mar is closing shop this Saturday. Though I don't go very often anymore, I used to really enjoy Rio Mar and will miss it. I've had some truly memorable dinners there. For one family member's b-day, they allowed us to bring about 25 bottles of wine and they created an international menu to pair with the wines. One I'll remember forever.
This is very interesting, they hope to open in the Spring.

Prescott said that the taqueria under works for the old RioMar space will feature a prominent bar, well-stocked with tequila, mezcal and rum. Of the food, he said, "We have every intention of making everything fresh. We'll do tacos, burritos, chilaquiles — things that people understand."
This is very interesting, they hope to open in the Spring.

Prescott insisted that the replacement of RioMar with a taqueria did not signal an abandonment of ambitious Latin cooking. To that end, he and Bazan are preparing to open a Peruvian-and-Japanese influenced seafood restaurant in the Faubourg Marigny called Nuevo Centro.

Not surprised. may have been good years ago but has been mediocre for a while now.

This is sad, I really liked this place over the years. Didn't notice much difference after Garcia left FWIW.
Whenever I think about Mexican restaurants, I think of that sight gag from the Simpson's when they toured the Duff Brewery.
Camera shows three vats of beer, Duff Dry, Duff Light and regular Duff. Camera then pans upward and shows a single spigot labeled Duff that separates into three.
I think most Mexican food comes from the same factory.

Ate there as a guest weekend before last. The waitress told us then it was closing down. Food was solid, but not mind-blowing.

Another taqueria? We seem to have a whole slew of those...not exactly an underserved niche.
"Things people understand"...ugh. Rio Mar's recent downturn has nothing to do with its food being "hard to understand".

I agree, the taqueria thing is getting out of hand.
The place they're talking about opening in the marigny is exciting. Sounds like an asian style peche.

Quit going about 1.5 years ago. It just changed. Probably correlates with the ownership change, but they just lost their pizzaz (sp?).
I used to go years ago and loved it, but it has been a while. Just too many restaurants to explore. Reading the article, it sounds like they are saying they were not pulling in the locals anymore so they are changing the concept to appeal to the tourists spilling out of the Convention Center, etc... Does not sound promising but perhaps they will make more $$.
