Replacing a bad hard drive with a new hard drive

The hard drive on my laptop has crashed. I'm told I may be able to retrieve all the info on it, but I shouldn't try to boot it up anymore.
Who can I take the hard drive to and have them make an exact, bootable, copy of it onto a new hard drive?

It's probably better to just install fresh copies of Windows and all your apps, then copy just your data from the old drive via external USB enclosure.
Assuming "crashed" means it doesn't boot, then it's likely that any attempt to make an exact copy will result in corrupted files on the new drive that will be hard to track down and replace. So then you will have a new drive that doesn't boot.

^ what he said. Cloning the drive would just clone the problem. 2.5" enclosures are cheap:

Does it click or make noise... if so, you are screwed and will need to send it to a data recovery company.
If it is just not booting to Windows, then you probably just need to do the standard startup repair options or run checkdisk on it via the recovery console.

Not necessarily. Many a clicking drive has been read from with the freezer trick.

Ubuntu live CD/flash drive. Boot into it and copy the files from the Windows HD on to it, if they are recoverable. I've done this several times and had a pretty good success rate.

I've actually got all the important stuff off of it I need and got a new laptop.
I really just want to get a new hard drive with windows and all the drivers and other technical computer stuff already on it so that it will work without being shity, so I thought making an exact copy of the crashed drive would be best. I plan on giving it to my kid to frick around with.
So maybe the better question is what do i need to do to get a new hard drive that will work with the hardware I have. I don't want to buy windows or other software and shite.

This. Download a bootable copy of Ubuntu onto a flash drive. You'll then be able to copy your files to the same flash drive or to a DVD.

No. If you have your important shite, do a clean Windows install, and install your device drivers, which can almost always be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Clean is the way to go.

You're a good candidate for an Apple product.

without an in-house it group who can give you an imaged hard drive you will need to do it your self. Sure you could pay almost any computer shop to do it for you but you'll need your windows disk or license.
And they will have the drive cage that will let them copy your stuff over.

Its a better practice to just put a fresh install of Windows on the new HDD.

If the drive spins up, replace it with something good then by an external SATA to USB case. You can pull your information off that way.
