How much >$500?
Check out the Sony SSF-line (7000 would be my recommendation; you don't need a sub with them) of floor standing speakers. They're great for home theatre. You can get a real good low, rumbly bass on your explosions from your movies.
Slightly more expensive, there's a Polk Audio pair of towers that get reviewed slightly better on average. There's a pair of JBLs also in that $2-400 price range that people like, too.

Personally, I would buy a solid set of towers and just have stereo sound until you put together the cash to finish it up from there. I am not a fan of the small package 5.1 set ups. That said, Definitive Tech has a set that is pretty good.
Definitive Tech Pro Cinema 60
For a little over your budget
Pioneer 5.1 set up with towers
This is actually a pretty well rated system especially for the money.

I'm in the home theater business and $500 just made me laug
Save some more and you can get one for around $1500 for intro level
Onkyo is best bang for buck. I like Polk audio too

$1500 is far from entry level. It may be what you recommend, but entry level starts far, far below that.

Never heard of this company. Any good?

For that budget, I recommend the Energy speakers, but not the included sub. Get the 5.0 set and get a better sub.

yeah, Definitive Technology makes some good stuff. In the big world of audio, they fall in the mid-price range. They fall just above something like Klipsch and on par with Polk for their full product range. They top out about 2500 per tower speaker or so with some lower offerings in the 400 range.
That set is pretty well rated but any budget small speaker set will sound like a budget small speaker set.

I do think it's worth noting that this is a tremendous improvement over all but the most high-end on-TV speakers (and really I'm probably overplaying how nice the super high end TVs with what look like decent speakers sound. I've never owned one or heard them, but I can all but guarantee a $2-300 investment in a pair of stereo towers with deep bass will dramatically improve the home theatre experience of either all tvs or all except these tvs).

Not for anything decent. You know, a semi accurate sound field.

Does not exist. I'll put it bluntly. The speakers on ALL TVs suck.

Go with these. They are the best at that budget and under 1000. Also get a BIC F12 sub.
Newegg was having a sale on the Pioneers a week ago.

I get what you're saying, but i would imagine the ones on the Sony XBR 84" are at least better than most, maybe up to the level of very cheap extra-tv speakers. Like I said, I've never actually put ear to them to say so or not.

I'm not saying that $1500 doesn't get you better stuff or better soundstaging. I'm just saying it's not "entry level." You can get OK soundstage in the $200-400 range with a set of stereo towers. I can't comment on HTIB or 5.1/7.1/2 systems.

Sony makes shitty consumer speakers so I expect the add on ones on their TVs to be the same. I probably have a different criteria than most for judging sound quality as I've been in/associated with this business for 20+ years.

On the low end, they tend to have that "boomier" bass that audiophiles don't care for. They're SSF line is a decent enough sub-$300 home theatre speaker. Polk Audio probably makes a better one, but it's a matter of preference over quality. check out the SSF-5000 and 7000 consumer reviews. They're frequently reviewed and frequently reviewed highly. I happen to own the SSF-7000. They're definitely an entry-level buy, and if I were doing it again, i would head to a Magnolia Center Best Buy and give listen to some competitively priced Polk Audio and JBL towers, but I was very much impressed with the amount of decent enough sound you can get out of the cheap stuff. I think it's more about what color sound you like best than the quality of the product.
On the high-end, I'll either assume you're not speaking of their AR line with regards to being "consumer" speakers or suggest that you've not read reviews on them or put ear to them. It's distinct sound, and at the price range, they make competitive products. They lack anything in the $500-20,000 range until recently, and there offerings there are limited. Like any company, they offer color to the sound that you either like or don't like. In either case, it beats the hell out of TV speakers or the majority of small HTIB setups.
Again, the guy said $500, so I'm limiting my input to what can be found there. When you get up in that $1500 range, used audiophile-grade stuff is abundantly available and probably a better way to go, in my humble opinion. Soundstage on good stereo sound is more impressive than any 5.1 or 7.1 stuff that I've heard.

I agree that getting two tower speakers would be better than a cheap 5.1 system. Over budget by $60 but this is a great deal. LINK
These would sound way better than some small box 5.1 system. As your budget grows, you can add more pieces to it.

I would hop on it in a heartbeat. Those are a pair of speakers you're more likely to add to than replace in a HT setup.
