49ers RB Kendall Hunter tore the ACL in his right knee during Friday's practice.
He is done for the season. Even though running back was a position of depth for the 49ers, this injury is a blow to the offense. Rookie Carlos Hyde is now the favorite to back up Frank Gore, and out-of-favor LaMichael James could also see an increase to his workload. Hunter was entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Thoughts on how this affects Gore/Hyde? Probably helps Hyde more than anyone.

I don't know if it will affect Gore all that much. It seemed like Hunter would just spell him every once in awhile on pass plays or something.

Gore continues to put up good numbers as he gets older because of guys coming in on later downs to help keep him fresh.

any word on what Lattimore is doing out there? Wonder id he's going to try and give it a go this year.

I saw a tweet that said that Lattimore is not close yet. Didn't elaborate on whether there was a shot at him playing this year or not.

frick... I like Hunter a lot, especially in that backfield because he has a different skill set and ability than Gore, Hyde, etc. And is much better than James.

Helps Hyde because he will probably be the backup but helps Gore more than anything. To me, provides some stability that he'll still get majority of the carries, unless SF wants to run Hyde a bunch as a rookie.

From nfl.com:

quote:

Lattimore to begin season on NFI list: After back-to-back devastating knee injuries in 2011 and 2012, Marcus Lattimore’s road to the NFL has been a long, arduous journey. And it appears as if he has hit another speed bump. Lattimore will begin the season on the NFL’s non-football injury list. The move could be a sign that the 49ers aren’t as optimistic about Lattimore’s recovery just yet, and it gives more insight into why they drafted Carlos Hyde in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. While some had Lattimore pegged as a late-round flier in case the ageless Frank Gore did succumb to an injury, that notion has gone out the window now. Hyde is the one to handcuff with Gore or take a chance on, not Lattimore. At least until the 49ers show as much faith in Lattimore’s knee as he does.

With Hunter out for the season, and James most likely out for at least 4-6 weeks (I'm guessing); Carlos Hyde gets a huge bump. Definitely going to be targeting him in my draft. I read somewhere that SF had planned to give Gore like 50-70 touches all season, before the injuries, but have to think that number goes way up now as well. I like Hyde a lot this season though.

I had Gore last year. He was solid, but unspectacular. He usually got in for a TD if the team got on the goal line at any point before the game was already decided. But whenever the 49ers got ahead in games, Gore was gone. Hunter was in. Even if the game was close, Gore was not pounding the ball between the 20s in the second half. That meant only 3 games over 100 yards. Also, Gore does nothing in the receiving game.

Gore has been consistent over the last few years, but I see his numbers declining a little. Even so, don't expect the 49ers to trust anyone else (besides Kaep, of course) on the goal line unless the game is otherwise decided.

No they were going to give 50-70 carries less than he had last year.

50-70 carries is 4 string numbers
