Donuts in this city largely suck IMO. I don't eat them often, and that has changed to almost never since living in this part of the state. I grew up with Ruddock's in Crowley. They are still the best and will always be my yardstick for donuts. I've tried Sam's in Walker. While they were hot and tender, they were not even close to Ruddocks.

Then comes Mr Ronnies. Reluctantly I tried them and was blown away. First, the fact that they serve glazed donuts HOT 24/7 is pretty damn impressive. The donut was nice and warm and tasted homemade. I'm not sure what they fry in, but it also is much cleaner tasting than most. No funky donut burp has occurred yet.

I tried a bite of the chocolate sprinkle. It was pretty good, but nothing tops a warm glazed.

They are pretty legit. The only place I have found that I won't buy from is Southern Made. Walked in there to get a dozen mixed and was told they wouldn't do it. Threw up a deuce and left. Hope they have changed that.

I'm not, nor have I ever been a donut freak or expert. I'm much more savory than sweet but if push comes to shove and I need a good donut, that original Krispy Kreme on Plank Road is hard to beat. I grew up eating Tony's which was down the street and I enjoyed but I'd say I have a dozen donuts every 4 years.

McKenzies on Harrison avenue is where I'd go with my dad before school as a kid. The smell of ciggs, doughnuts, coffee, and cakes baking fresh to this day was the best odor to ever pass my through my nostrils.

I didn't care for Mr. Ronnies -- those things were wayyy too dense, like paperweights. Plus they were cold, even the glazed that they claimed were made throughout the day. Best I've found are Shipley's in Bunkie.

They are certainly more dense than a Krispy Kreme (which I find way too airy). I didn't find them heavy, but they are a more chewy yeasty style dough than most of the donuts around here. That's closer to the Ruddock's Bakery (Crowley,LA) style. My glazed were hot tonight, and it was not busy in there. Shipleys in TX is a solid donut for sure. I haven't been to Bunkie to try the ones there.

Yeah, I guess I prefer a lighter donut. I don't care for KK though, unless they're the hot glazed straight off the conveyor belt.

I've been to Mr. Ronnie's (the new one on Lee in BR) a few times, and there are some things I like and some I don't. I agree that most of them seem heavy, and for regular glazed, I'd rather something like Thee Heavenly Donut or even Mary Lee. But some of their cake donuts are really good, especially the blueberry and the lemon ones. Their donuts also seem really big--my kids could each only finish half of one of the chocolate frosted donuts.

Most of their donuts seem to have a lot of glaze on them--too much for me--so I scrape some of it off before eating them.

Yep, their cake donuts, and some of the filled ones I got were really, REALLY sweet.

Didn't they also have beer and video poker??

Then Charlie's Po Boys down the street (across from the steak knife)in Lakeview? Always a good start to a college football Saturday!

There's technically a Tastee's there now that sells McKenzie/has their recipes for buttermilk drops and donuts.

ETA: Nola area needs a Mr. Ronnie's...don't like most of the places around here.

Is Mary Lee the popular place that the FDB shits on?

Their early morning glazed donuts are ridiculous.

Haven't had them yet.... But the fleur de lis on Jefferson near highland is not bad at all. Like them better than Mary Lee.
Thee Heavenly donut is owned by a woman that used to own a Meche's location in bureaux bridge. So, they are Meche's recipes. Which aren't gross by any means.
Fleur de lis also has some pretty decent kolaches

All I know is that when I get donuts I want them to be warm. I went first thing this morning a little after 6am to give Mr. Ronnies another try. The glazed I got were warm but the others were like cold bricks. Seems like they were just leftovers from yesterday or whenever they were made. I can't even eat them.
