Just watched the highlights of this game on youtube.

For you older guys, how big of an upset was this game? where would you rank it on a list of top LSU upsets of all time?

It was massive. LSU was given virtually zero chance to win this game. Bama was on a 31 game unbeaten streak (they had tied Tennessee earlier that year), and LSU was coached by Curley Hallman and was coming off of a 2-9 season. There had been some chinks in the Bama armor, but no one seriously thought LSU could exploit them.

It is still the biggest upset in LSU history just because rarely are we so terrible.

It was halfway through Curley's tenure so I was too depressed at the time to even remember it.

Florida 97 may have been more fun, but it doesnt come close to the 93 Bama upset. Not even close

LSU was ranked 14 when they beat #1 Florida. People can disagree all they want but the upset of Bama was way bigger.

LSU was like a 26 point underdog that day with an awful head coach and on the road no less.

It was humungous. Unfortunately, it probably save Hallman's job for another year. It also got our hopes up for going to a bowl game only to be steamrolled at home by Arkansas in the final game of the year.

I suppose it depends on how you define "big upset".

If you're talking about the upset with the largest gap between the two teams, then this 93 game has to be at the tops. Bama was undefeated and on a long streak of success, and LSU, quite simply, really sucked.

If you're talking about the biggest game that was an upset (where the game actually meant something in the bigger scheme of SEC football), then the 97 game would get my vote. We were a good team playing a great team in a full stadium on national TV.

I had never even really heard of this one. Then again, I didn't start following LSU seriously until '97.

Damn, if the Heisman was a weekly award, Ivory Hillard would have won it that week.

Was he like an option-QB turned safety or something?

the 93 Bama upset was technically "bigger", but we still sucked. 97 Florida "felt" a lot bigger.

just because Florida was ranked #1 doesn't mean it was a bigger upset. LSU was also ranked and most people thought it would be a competitive game. The LSU-bama '93 game however, was not expected to be close. LSU was 3-5 when they played #5 bama. LSU was 4-1 when they played Florida in "97 and they had an All American, Kevin Faulk. LSU beating Florida in 97 is no where near as unbelievable as LSU beating bama in 93

This was more of a turning point than a big upset IMO...although it was definitely an upset.

I'm as big of a homer as there is. But even I went down to that game just out of loyalty. The Mrs. didn't want to go and I talked a buddy in to going with me. He wasn't too thrilled as he had a cold and I told him, "if LSU is down by 14 going into the 4th, we'll leave."

Unbelievable. Now, had they put in Palmer at QB sooner, who knows . But on the other hand, we had the breaks that day and really could have won by three touchdowns.

Remember my neighbor (who were impartial but knew I was big Tig fan) asking me that morning while cutting grass if we had any chance kind of tongue in cheek I replied "yes, we will beat them watch"; they snickered said Oh OK we will watch. Well they called me after and gushed with apologetic praise and wonder how I even could fathom this; I knew it I said; I still wonder how the heck we beat them. I guess was our day and the QB I think was #2 Palmer was harassed all afternoon and threw a few picks I recall we just took control!
