Was Johnny really an a-hole or was it Daniel son that was the prick?

Thin about the sequence of events. Daniel shows up from out of town and immediately starts hitting on Johnny's girlfriend, I don't even think they had broken up yet. Daniel also talks chit to Johnny in front of the crown AFTER picking up his girlfriend. Later Daniel sprays water all over Johnny when he is in a bathroom stall. I can't remember but he might have done a few other things to Johnny as well. Was Daniel the antagonist here?

As I was not a high schooler in California in the late/mid 80's, I really don't feel it's my place to comment on the actions of these kids.
FWIW, Daniel was a whiny bitch who mostly brought on his torment by engaging with a group of assholes who would have likely left him alone had he just steered clear.
