There is one here in Savannah that carries all local and organic produce along with some seafood and dry goods. It is only 24 dollars a year to join. Are the prices at these things usually less than at say Whole Foods are a farmers market?

Co-op or not, it couldn't be MORE expensive than the Porsche known as Whole Foods.

I am not really sure. Going after work today. I know they are only open one day a week. They have a list of vendors that you can order from and pick up on Thursday or you can buy what they have in stock that day.

NOLA food co-op has odd pricing....some things are cheaper than WF, others are more expensive. It is focused on organic, natural, and alternative (as opposed to high-end/gourmet/specialty).

Best food coop ever: the Dartmouth co-op food store in Hanover, NH. Fantastic groceries, tons of local cheese, dairy, produce...and competitive prices.

Ok went and checked it out yesterday. They have some items on the premises that are available to the general public. When you sign up as a member online you have access to the items offered by about 30 vendors. These include local and organic produce, grass fed meats, seafood, artisian cheeses, jelly, honey, dry goods etc. You place your order and pick up the following week. I have not checked prices yet but seems like a pretty cool deal.

It seems like pricing depends on the co-op structure, how established it is, and how big it is. From my experience co-ops where working is required for membership tend to have pricing that is significantly less than whole foods and for better products (probably because they are not paying salaries). For instance the Park Slope food co-op has great deals (but is also somewhat crazy). On the other hand I am a member of the New Orleans Food Co-Op, and I would love to support them more, but I hardly ever shop there because it's too expensive. The pre-ordering situation at the Savannah co-op is a bit like a CSA share. Those usually are a better deal than a place like whole foods.
