Has the Size & Quality of Fruit dropped off from times past?

Back in the day when I went over to visit my grandmother, she always had a ton of fruit and veggies on hand that she picked up from the local grocer. It was always quite good in terms of size/quality/flavor. I just took that for granted and never gave it a second thought - until today.
With all the downsizing on supermarket shelves lately to keep unit prices reasonable, it occurred to me that the same might be happening with produce. Seems to me that the quality of produce has dropped off noticeably and I suspect that produce buyers are resorting to Class B stuff to keep prices in line.
Is this just my imagination? TIA.

almost assuredly
we have good fruit out of season these days, and tons of organic options even at shitty grocery stores

It just depends on where you buy it

size does not equal quality. Agriculture has come a long way in the face of EPA regulations

Nahh you just have to go to farmers markets or specialty grocery stores.
only the poors get their produce from the supermarket

looks good, mostly flavorless, it's hard to remember what a tomato tastes like
ETA: and "organic" shite is a huge bunch of malarkey

size is actually up, but quality is down. Today's produce is all about shelf life, pest resistance, and volume rather than flavor. Store bought tomatoes taste like water these days.

I find hybrid apples the size of grapefruits all the time, and holy cow they are amazing.

Your better off goin to a farmers markets and getting locally grown fresh fruit n veggies. It's always gonna be better than any supermarket.

The fruit I have been getting from Costco lately is some of the best fruit I can remember.

Tends to be true. Some types of tomatoes-- heirloom comes to mind-- tend to be flavorful, but whatever the large, basic tomatoes are, they tend to be fairly bland tasting.
On the other hand, it seems like they last longer. Used to be tomatoes would start rotting in about a week if you forgot them in the refrigerator. Recently, my wife found a tomato that was in the fridge for 2-3 weeks and it still looked fine... she was actually kind of alarmed that it didn't show signs of rot.
I think there was a cover story on Businessweek recently about GMOs. Wanted to read it and never got around to it.

Size and quality seem to often get inversely related. There are so many times I get giant strawberries, apples, or bananas that taste like nothing.
