Preacher (comic -- SPOILERS)

Preacher has been in development hell for over a decade, but they are finally adapting the popular comic into a TV show. I've never actually read it, so I went down to my local comic shop, picked up a trade paperback, and read the first 12 issues. It's one of the the most praised comics of my life, and I'll admit, I was a bit curious even though I never got around to it.
Ummm.... has anyone noticed this comic is terrible? Forget that its written by a guy who clearly has never even been in the south, yet set the thing in Texas. OK, I'll spot you one stereotypically awful redneck family in your attempt at Southern gothic... but three? Who are also the only three families you meet? I mean, dial back the stock characters, man.
And I hate movies/TV/books that rely on main characters not telling each other pretty important details. Let me get this straight, you're okay with telling your girlfriend that you've been possessed by the spawn of an angel and a demon which gives you supernatural powers BUT you won't tell her "hey, my family is batshit insane, we might want to avoid them"? And the family finds them right after their most powerful ally leaves to be on his own because, um, reasons?
Seriously, why is this thing considered a classic? Why have so many people been trying to adapt it into a TV show? It's terrible. At least the over the top, relentless violence in Walking Dead serves a narrative purpose. Here, it's just gratuitous.
OK, John Wayne as a guardian angel is pretty cool. Other than that, this was a total waste of time.

I enjoyed Swamp Thing, even though Moore hadn't been to South Louisiana.

Yes, because Moore doesn't lapse into lazy stereotypes to populate Swamp Thing.
That's what V for Vendetta was for.

the ending is what really ruined it for me, I'm not a fan at all. I would say it's decent, there are definitely better comics in this genre/vein I would say

I always thought it was overrated.

Everything I've read about this story tells me it's not something I'm interested in reading.

Preacher is one of my favorite graphics. The first story arc is ok, but the book doesn't really hit its stride until the "Until the End of the World" story line. I'd suggest you read that, though I think you'll hate the depiction of Jesse's grandma and her backwater Louisiana ilk.
