Have never really listened to them, like ever. Tell me where to start.

If you want to start with a specific album, try Loaded-- it's the most accessible.

"Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" -- essentially a country-rock track

"Who Loves The Sun" -- this could easily have gotten airplay on top-40 radio as sunshine-pop bubblegum

"Sweet Jane" (live 1969)

"Pale Blue Eyes"

"Rock & Roll"

' Oh, Sweet Nothing' is awesome, but it's really the only one I like.

Listen to Heroin about 100 times in a row.

The VU is a bit overrated, but man, that song is f'n perfect. And it's the perfect distillation of the band, especially how the song simulates a trip.

IMHO it's actually the most overrated of their songs. And as I have little interest in a heroin trip, I seldom listen to it

"I'm waiting for the man" is usually a good introduction into the VU

The middle instrumental section of "What Goes On" is one of my favorite parts in all of music. Just blissful.

they are all good except the stuff without lou reed, i would agree loaded is the most accessible. i personally like velvet underground and nico the most.

heroin is their best song IMHO. i had a friend that wrote a paper on it in college, about how it was synesthesia. the paper sucked but he got an A.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

I went with the debut (7.99 at Ed Mckay's). I'm about halfway through it. I can see why it would be considered "dated", but I'm addicted to "Venus in Furs" and "All Tomorrow's Parties". "Heroin" is the next track up, will listen the next time I get in the car.

It caught me off guard though, I was expecting something more Pink Floyd-ish. VU is much more avant-garde than Floyd is.
