Has anyone taken this exam and if so, how did you prepare? I have taken a class on price risk management and have a strong foundation on hedging. Would free online material be enough to prepare or is there a text that would be recommended? Thanks.

I passed the Series 3 last October using paid materials...Kaplan and Securities Training Corporation out of Chicago. We had an instructor from STC in our office for a day of review prior to sitting for the exam. I'm quite a few years removed from regularly having to study for exams so having the Series 3 forced upon my industry by Dodd-Frank wasn't a cakewalk for me. I would suggest purchasing one of the paid online tutorials that will time and grade each section. The hardest thing when sitting for this exam is managing the time you spend on each question. I also found that no matter which review course you choose, the exam at the testing center most certainly asks the same questions in a very different way. Not to add pressure but be aware of the mandatory waiting periods between exam attempts should you not pass it on the first try.

Thought I'd update this in case anyone searches for this in the future:
I was able to pass, although it was a bit close for comfort. I spent 2 weeks using this free online tutorial that was a godsend: LINK
Just do the free demo, it has 600+ questions and gives you the answers afterwards. These questions were most similar to the actual exam of any I looked at. Investopedia.com actually confused me a bit more and made me freak out on the regulations when they were much easier than the ones asked on there. I bought a book online and returned it after glancing over the material and seeing that it wasn't well written or helpful.
I probably didn't prepare as diligently as I should, but I thought I'd take it before I'm in the job market as a nice to have on a resume if I decide to take a job that requires passing the Series 3 within a short time period.
