OT Car Aficianados
Posted by TXTIGERTAIL on 7/24/14 at 12:03 am00
I'm looking to buy a new car. I currently drive an Audi A5 and am looking for something more comfortable that is still fun to drive. I have it narrowed down to an Audi A7 and a Jaguar XJ. Does anyone drive either? Am I missing something better in this price range?
TIA
TIA

If it's comfort you're after then the XJ would be the best out of those two. What do you find uncomfortable about the A5? What has made you narrow it down to those two cars?

I owned the A7. Nice and pretty reliable. I believe the Audi "7" is hard to beat. You may consider the "S" model for a good bit more performance. I drove both A and S for about a year and am on the RS now.

I like the body styles and they look good on paper for driving capability. I sat in the A7 recently and it was NOTICABLY more comfortable than my car. Got me thinking I'm ready to change.

If it's comfort you're after get an XJ with some smaller wheels. Those thicker sidewalls will give you a little extra cush. The Jag suspension gives the best compromise between suppleness and body control that I've found in any car.

If you get the Jag make sure to buy two, so you can drive one while the other is in the shop. I actually know a guy that does this, he loves Jags for some reason but they're constantly breaking. It's like owning a boat; no matter what you do, it'll always have issues.

The new Jags rate very well from both a quality and fun quotient. The company has shed it's dismal British Leyland record of poor quality. Ford Motor Company sank billions into modernizing the production plants and quality control. The company since sold to an Indian Company has carried that further along as well. It depends on what you like, but the Jag has cut a lot of weight through use of alloys and to me is more fun than an Audi 5 or 7, both of which have a Quattro all wheel system that makes the car handle benignly but uninspiring. The German interior is first rate in fit and finish, but very Teutonic and Spartan compared to the Jaguar. The British use of Connelly hides and wood interior pieces is very nice in its own right. In the eighty grand range there are several good choices and I would hit the BMW dealers as well as Mercedes and look at the six series four door coupe and the Mercedes CLS. But in a head to head between a Jag and Audi I like the Jag.

Careful with the audi....3.0t has oil consumption issues

Cadillac CTSV would be a great choice, but you may need to find a certified used 2013 model to get to that price range.

The BMW 7 series isn't very pretty but it's the height of comfortable. Otherwise the two you're looking at are good choices.

I'd go with the Lexus LS. Comfort and reliability.

Check out the Audi S4 and S5. They're basically the same as the A4 and A5, except they've got much better engines and nicer interiors.
I test drove an A4 and an S4 a couple of weeks ago and the S4 was significantly better (which is impressive because the A4 is a damn good car). Plus, with that bump up to the S series, you get a car that is pretty dang spry (sub 5 second 0-60).
I went with the S4 and have been immensely happy with the decision.

Why would someone looking at big sedans drop down to the 4? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

For the same reason a person looking for "comfort" would opt for the S model. Comfort is the only criteria he has given us so far yet there are multiple suggestions to go for the sportier, harsher riding, S variant.

I mean only one person suggested the S, and didn't say anything about it being more comfortable than the A. Up until S4 guy anyway

The 4 and 5 are the same car, except one is a sedan while the other is a coupe. It's not exactly "dropping down".
Maybe you need more space than me, but the S4 is plenty roomy in my opinion.

It's dropping down from the 7 or XJ, which are the cars OP was considering. Although with your user name, I'm not surprised you can't follow that.
