Just thinking about this the other night, but do you agree with me when I say that the best movies ever were created in the 1990s. My three favorites, Silence of the Lambs, The Shawshank Redemption, and Titanic were made in that decade. Plus you have the other great movies like Fight Club, American Beauty, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas... etc. The list goes on.

70s with the introduction of the blockbuster and the 90s with the proliferation of the indie movie definitely are the 2 most defining decades since the studio system started way back when

I'm certainly biased, as it is when I came of age, but yes. The 90s were an amazing time for film. Indie cinema, of course, exploded but it was also a Golden Age in foreign cinema. Iran became a major player (Taste of Cherry) and the Danes gave us the cinematic vow of chastity, Dogme 95. Sure, the films were tedious, but it is still one of the most revolutionary and influential ideas in filmmaking since the French New Wave. Even blockbusters smartened up, as the influence of the indies seeped into the major studios.

It was a great, exciting time which, like the music of the era, ended depressingly with a series of increasingly terrible knock offs and a retreat from the high minded ideals of the day.

Nah, distance has let the cream of the 90s rise to the top. Their were so many godawful movies back then that you hardly felt you were in some golden age.

I would say that I think we are currently in a television renaissance.

50s was the bests. But I'd put the 90s up there with the 70s. Really though there are great and good movies in every decade.

I actually like movies from the last 15 years. Maybe it's because of the CGI breakthroughs, but that's just me. One thing I can say for sure is that TV has been better than ever the last 10 years.
