Saw this question on glassdoor. What is an interviewer looking for in this question? Everyone has broken the rules. Are they looking for honesty?

You freaking tell them about the time another guy had an account you wanted, so you called up the account manager and told them you'd bring them chick fila breakfest on your own dime for a month.

Whatever it is you come up with, make sure it's not a safety rule or a law broken.

Think of something like took a company laptop home to finish some work that had a hard deadline.

This is a question you get when they are basically screwing with you.

It's not a question designed to elicit a "real" example...it's simply a test of your verbal agility and ability to respond to a difficult or uncomfortable question. You're supposed to smile, continue to look relaxed, and give a politician's non answer about how you've had the good fortune to work in organizations with flexible cultures and supportive management so you haven't encountered the need to break rules to get the job done. Blah, blah, blah....

Tell them something like this:

"Breaking the rules isn't something I've ever had to do. I think if you have conversations with your teammates/managers, do some research and think creatively you can almost always solve a problem within the rules."

If they push further about breaking the rule you can go with this:

"Well if a rule seems like it can't be overcome and it seems like a bad rule then I'd work with managers to find out why the rule exists and work to change it rather than break it."

I frequently beg for forgiveness instead of asking permission.

Otherwise I couldn't get anything done.

Tell them you drove 90mph and are parked out in a handicap spot so you could be on time for the interview

Tell them you worked on Sunday to meet a deadline. If I were interviewing I'd rather hear something really small than a lie about never having broken a rule. If you say you have never or never had to beeak a rule I would think you are a douche, cocky, don't have what it takes, or a liar.

or atleast have some sort of "i always try to learn as much as i can about motivations and reasoning behind why things are in place the way they are - in this instance i was confident to make a decision to follow the spirit of the rule despite going outside the letter of it in order to properly address the needs of the situation both for the client, and business.

Tell em "you're goddamned right I ordered the code red".

Seriously though, the best reply is to say you've always been able to accomplish tasks without having to resort to breaking rules.

First ask to clarify "rules" or "laws"

Bonus point for using your hands to make quotations while saying it.

this is what I would do. I break rules all the time, i would give them an example. And say i was trying to change the rule.

Talk about breaking an "unwritten rule" that is really just a bad cultural norm.

Don't talk about breaking an actual rule.
