How did greens roll back then?

Late 70's, early 80's.
Watching greatest rounds and the '89 PGA looked like they were lightning. Did greens roll as well then as they do today with all of our science and modern tech?

Also, Seve was the fuuckin man.

I played Publix in Cali. I'd say medium speed. The Long Beach courses were pretty good back then. Griffith Park. Played a few tournaments at semi-privates. Nothing great.

The courses I played were pretty much the same speed. I imagine Tiger played those same Long Beach courses. Cypress was right on the edge of there. Course up in Palos Verdes was kinda joke. Just a tap rolled off the green. Just stupid. That was probably the only greens like that. Average Joe hated that one.

I think I started in 1972. Par 3 course. I snuck on the edge of the range and smacked a 9 iron at the chipping green until I got chased away. About 1974 I moved up to the par 72 course.

Would ya say a little quicker these days, or about the same?

Most courses are faster. Giving the people what they want. Today they have all that dwarf Bermuda and stuff. Back then it was just grass I think.

I'm starting to wonder if the skill level then is anywhere what it is today as well. I've seen a lot of crappy shots.

Curtis was acting like a nerd there. People walk outside the ropes, quit acting like the whole course needs to be still.

According to my dad the disparity between country clubs and muni greens was pretty big. Basically what you get at top public courses and clubs today is the same. The improvement has been from the run of the mill public courses (think LSU, Webb, etc.)

The quality is much better now. They are faster now. Makes it harder being fast, but easier to putt since putting and chipping is almost a guaranteed true roll these days. Not so much back in the day.

Don't forget, you actually had to play golf back then, not just aim and swing like most these days.
