It bothers me but why was it in a thrift store to begin with?

No. It's his property. He can do what he'd like.

It bothers me more that he had the ability to buy a Purple Heart from a thrift store.

Guy who received that did so for that kid to express himself that way, no matter how tasteless

Still a dick move and kids in need of a good arse kicking

It happens all the time. I'd imagine it's how the stolen valor asshats get their medals.

You say that, but I could honestly see a veteran falling on hard times and pawning it to pay for a meal...

I sort of think someone needs to earn a Purple Heart for kicking the shite out of this kid, personally

Nope, if that was really earned I doubt it would be in a store. I can get 10 of those right now, means nothing except to the person that earned it.

I think it's a bit bizarre but the original owner apparently didn't value it. Might have had good reason not to either, some were awarded for minor scratches.

At any rate I don't know but the person to whom it was original awarded should have the final say, not me.

There are several movies from the Depression '30s with scenes of WWI vets forced to sell their medals

My favorite is one where Bogart tries to pawn his medals and the pawnbroker tells him, "I've already got enough medals to start my own army'
