LINK

Several factors:

Companies like Taylormade over-saturating the market
GOAT Woods derping at the majors, and nobody nearly as interesting coming through the ranks
The wrong demos care about golf (old people)
Bleh economy

Barring unforeseen societal shifts, I don't see a bright future for the game in the short or long term. I think in 15-20 years it could be niche sport at best.

This could just mean its stupid for the Walmart of sporting goods to have golf pros. They dont have football coaches.

It's hard to see this quiip as a refutation of his underlying point. It anything, I'd say it bolsters it.

Well, obviously the issue of golf's longevity is larger than this instance, however it's another bad indicator.

And this is a bad thing for consumers how?

If they can't compete, GTFO.

It kind of already is. And that's not a bad thing. Those who play or watch golf are generally a higher class of people.

That is exactly what this move was about. To compete

I understand. They were cutting PGA guys that give analysis of swings to get consumers "the right club for them" but their overhead was too high.

I suppose it could be a negative for consumers but they will just go to golf galaxy now to get a better fit, and probably just go to Dick's and buy the clubs.

Dick's/Golf Galaxy wins either way.

I'm sure thousands of people a month were getting fit at Dick's then going online to buy the correct product for 100s cheaper. It just wasn't a sustainable business model for them.

Golf is a good game but it's expensive and time consuming compared to other sports and games. Greens fees should be going down but they don't seem to be.

Plus it's not like playing slow-pitch softball or running or biking or working out which can be done much cheaper.

It's a shame but golf needs more public courses with reasonable greens fees. Equipment can be bought used and you don't need the best equipment to play well.

But it can be a very frustrating sport to play. I mean the time and money it takes to just not embarrass yourself on the golf course ended golf for me even though I do have a nice set of clubs.

The dude at the Baton Rouge Dicks is kind of an a-hole. I've had other people confirm my feelings too from their experiences

The other thing the golf dorks could probably weigh in on is, how much new equipment can you really sell every year? I know they do this in tennis, where every year new tech is brought out that supposedly brings you more power AND control , but only true golf/tennis nerds are going to pay top dollar for new stuff all the time. At some point, you put so much money into your equipment that it has to last you 3-5 years. So, there is only so much clothing and balls you can sell among Dick's, pro shops, high end golf stores, and online retailers.

so is every other retailer

golf clubs are pretty much a fixed price item....so they are making the same as other golf shops on clubs

honestly though, when i want to buy a club, dicks is the last place i think to go

I would agree with this. Analogous to people going to best buy to look at tvs and ordering it on Amazon.

Maybe with this decreased overhead, they can lower the prices of golf supplies to compete with the other stores.

the costs of labor, chemicals, equipment isn't going down anytime soon

golf courses are just too damn expensive to operate and maintain

and people bitch about the affordable places not being in as good of shape as the country clubs

Prices will stay the same, but overhead will be less.

I suspect they will still generate about just the same revenue, maybe a little less, with a lot less overhead in the golf department. I don't see this as golf slipping away in 15-20 years.
