I need one that can scan legal (8.5 x 14). Anyone have recommendations for a fairly cheap price -- $150ish max?

Hard to recommend printers. They are all terrible in their own special way, because there is no money in printer technology, just in the supplies. Therefore, basically every inkjet printer is designed to suck ink and make you replace printheads. Laser is good, but if you want color you'll need $200+ for a good one. With every printer, there is a "honeymoon" period where everything works beautifully, and you're blissfully ignorant about the cost of ownership, and you're unaware of the annoyance of what happens after you stop using it regularly (ink dries, printheads clog, cleaning cycles suck ink, one color runs out and the printer bitches at you to replace it even if you don't need it to print what you're trying to print).
I'd recommend a multi-function printer with a top auto document feeder, so that you can scan any size you want. The scanner glass on most all-in-one printers is designed for no larger than A4 paper. I've been using the officejet pro 8500a for years, and even though I sort of hate it, it's been my favorite home printer to date. I think the 8600 is the replacement.
When the printheads on my 8500a die (which cost nearly as much as the fricking printer to replace), I'm probably going to pick one of these up for $129: LINK
Seems to fit my purpose and probably yours as well. Printer/copy/scan/fax with auto-doc feeder to scan legal size, etc.. And they all pretty much have wifi and direct-print.

Thanks for the info. I've probably never owned a printer that I truly like but I'm trying to minimize the suck.

I have not scanned legal with this printer but it works like a champ when printing from my iPhone and iPad.
Good for scanning as well from the desktop - just not sure about legal sizes.
