FIL just bought a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI w/ chartplotter, downscan and all that good shite.

It will be used in freshwater (Toledo, Caddo, Red River, etc) and possibly a little marsh action down the road.

Is Navionics worth it? They have a cheaper Navionics "Gold", but Im not sure if it is even beneficial.

Do you update Navionics, and do you have to pay for updates?

I saw somewhere on the OB a while back someone mentioned a program being like google earth for your unit, what is that program?

I just bought the navionics plat plus for my lowrance, now i dont know what the diff is in that and the gold series, but it is bascially like having google maps on your gps unit. They sent a quick drive thing that you hook to your comp to download updates. Im comp retarded so i cant tell you how to do updates.
FWIW, i found it extremely helpful and detailed.

I know that they have a lake edition, that would probably be more useful for you.

If it would help, i can shoot you an email and take a pic of my gps unit w navionics so you can see if you like it or not.

If you wanna go the cheap route, get the app for your phone. It's awesome. I love just looking at it and picking out spots to try out when I finally get a real boat.

But for fishing toledo regularly, navionics is invaluable in my opinion.

I have the same unit. Bass Pro only carried Navionics Hot Maps. It was like $150. Gives way more detail and bottom depths and contours.

What comes on the unit is pretty basic. I wasn't impressed, but the Hot Maps is pretty good in my opinion. But spendy. The Standard Maps look pretty interesting. But as I understand it, the cards are pretty limited, area wise.

Full Disclosure: I am hardly a power user of chartplotters.
