I have a question for handgun guys?

My brother passed away and left me a R61 9mm but the ammunition is different (I think) I don't know much about guns. One says 380 ACP Wolf the other 380 AUTO what is the difference besides the name?

Sorry about your brother. ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. 380 ACP, 380 auto, 9mm short, 9 x 17 all the same.
9mm 9mm parabellum 9x19 9mm luger etc are all the other caliber.

There is also a 9mm Makarov. I believe the R61 was originally a mak, which is a 9x18 round
Upon googling, I see that they have rebarrelled many of them to a 380. As chessie said, the acp and auto on the 380 are not different, but you may want to make sure you are shooting the right caliber for the barrel.
A 380 will shoot from a makarov but can do some damage

it was common to change 9x18 mak's into .380 ACP with a simple barrel change. Federal sold barrels to do this and there where quite a few Maks sold as .380 conversions directly from the distributors. If the barrel is marked .380, 9mm short, 9mm Kurtz, it is chambered for a .380 and not the 9x18.

just googled and this is correct.
OP, what markings are on the barrel

More importantly, you need to determine what the barrel/chamber says. R61 came in 9mm Makarov (9x18mm).
What does the barrel/chamber say? 9mm? 9mm short? 9mmM? 9MMMak?

that big M stands for Makarov.
Your bro may have been shooting the wrong ammo out of it or the ammo could be for another gun.

Buy (or borrow) a box of 9mm mak and hand cycle it. It shouldn't fit if it is a 380 aftermarket barrel. If it fits, obviously don't shoot the 380 through it
I agree with striped. Sounds like it's the wrong ammo for that gun

Thanks, so I think you are suggesting I strictly put 9mm into it which makes sense. It just seems weird that he left a box of 380 ammo with a gun that had 9mmM on it.

Good idea, who knows if the barrel was mismarked

Follow Xenon suggestion -
Just know that the 9mm that you fire out of a Glock is not the same that would fire out of your brothers gun. You need to look for a box of 9mm Makarov (9x18mm) NOT 9mm parabellum/luger (9x19mm)
It can be very dangerous to shoot the larger round out of the barrel.

It's possible that the gun is stamped differently in two different places. The 380 and mak are very close in size

No
He is saying get some 9mm makarov ammo and cycle through it. If you go to the gun shop and ask for 9mm ammo they will surely give you 9mm Luger ammo which isn't what you want
The reason your brother left a box of 380 around is because it fit, though not perfectly. .380 ammo is 9mm in diameter, and so carries names sometimes like 9mm browning
It isn't hard to make a mistake
ETA, .380 ACP, .380 auto, 9mm browning, 9x17, 9mm kurz, 9mm short all exactly the same ammo

Thank you for the help and I will show them the pistol just to get it right. Appreciate it guys it means a lot because the gun is sentimental.
